Tech No sound while playing FF8

Hello.

I have a laptop with an intel GM965 chipset, a Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family graphics adepter, and a conexant 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller soundcard.

Unfortunately I hear no sound effects in game. I could hear the train sound (I mean the sound when the train moves when you're inside it), but that's it. No sound at all. No menu sounds, walking, fighting, drawing, spells...nothing at all.
MIDI music and the world map music plays just fine, nothing else.

I even tried updating to v1.2 but it didn't work.

Can anyone help me please?

Operating system? Vista is notoriously difficult to run games on. General solutions are to make sure your sound card driver is up to date, try running the game in Win9XP?) compatibility mode, or as an administrator.

If that fails, google for a patches. I googled it briefly and found other people with the same problem, but no particularly helpful solutions.

I agree with Franice, my sister uses Vista, her laptop sometimes crashes or the OS stops executing some games without any reason whatsover.

Are you playing the original game for PC or on a PSX emulator?

If you are using the PC version then there is a settings file that you will have to edit. If you are using PSX or EPSXe then you need to change the sound setting on the emulator.

Thanks for your replies fellas I'll try to react to each of them


My OS in Windows XP 64bit SP3, and I play a PC version. I ran the same game on another PC (There, I had WinXP SP2 32bit and the sound card was some Realtek AC97 as far as I remember), but the sound had worked even without the need of any patch.


I tried running the game in compatibility mode with older OS's, but to no avail.
I also tried running the game with and without the patch too, but no sound in either.


Kuhn, which settings file do you mean?


BTW: Maybe it's nothing, but when I open the final fantasy registry keys through regedit, (HK_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Square soft, inc\final fantasy VIII\1.00).I have this at the sound settings:

SoundGUID - REG_BINARY - 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
SoundOptions - REG_DWORD - 0x00000000 (0)

Weird....As if FF8 hasn't detected my sound, or as if I have it disabled or something...


EDIT: I reinstalled the game, now the soundguid and soundoptions are with non-zero values...No sound though, not even after patching again...

EDIT 2: What's even weirder, I open the sound.dat with FF8SND, but no sound would play, I have to extract it to be able to hear it...
