Hey there, This is my first post/thread in this forum first of all I am glad to have found a final fantasy loving community. In this thread I would like to state my opinions regarding my experiences on Final Fantasy.
How it all began?
- I wouldnt have heard about this series if it werent for my older brothers. They grew up in the era of ff6 and onwards and basically they lived the evolution of playstation and during those times I was basically a child. I was fascinated when I was watching my brothers play ff7,8,9 I didnt have a single knowledge of English but the games looked so fantastic and I still remember the excitement of my brothers playing these games as they were playing..
- As a teenager and my brothers as basically going to college or finishing high school I got very interested in trying the games they used to play in their childhood .. They were 6 years older than me now they were into world of warcraft and only 1 of them eventually played ff10 when it came out. Details apart I downloaded games like Unholy war , heroes 3 might and magic, diablo 2, Speed freaks, yu gi oh and of course Final fantasy.. I completed all of them but what really gripped me was final fantasy and this about 6 years ago. I had a very basic knowledge of English but still was able to play the game and understand the main idea of the storyline. The first game of final fantasy I played was final fantasy 7 on the pc version as my ps1 had been lost by my mother. I was so amazed at the style of the game the graphics were old but nonetheless the gameplay was so superior to other rpgs I played ( super mario, kirby, pokemon) that I became an instant fan. After finishing 7 without sidequesting I completed 8 and 9 with walkthroughs 100% completed and Final fantasy turned out to be my favourite games. Sure during the last 5 years I had turned into an avid wow player but whenever I went on holidays I would bring atleast 2 RPGs to complete. I ended up completing final fantasy 7 2 more times, 1 with walkthrough to discover the secrets and the other 1 alone, I also completed breath of fire 3 and 4 but thats a whole different sotry.. And basically as I had superior knowledge of english language by that time the storylines were just mindblowing to me.
I bought ff10, was that game revolutionary.. At first I was reluctant at the new looks and the whole sphere grid leveling system but it turned out to be one awsome final fantasy as well and I have to admit that I cried in the end.
Now in the recent past I was looking forward to play another final fantasy and I started reading online opinions about the rest of the series and I tried 6.. The game is very good, especially in gameplay but god the storyline was in my opinion very inferior to the other titles (7,8,9,10) and the villain didnt turn out as good as I thought , imo kefka is very cliche and only in the end did I like the nihilistic philosofy but still was rather disappointing after all I had read about. I guess if the fanboys of this game hadnt exagerated in everyhting they said my experience of this game would have turned out to be much better ( PS. ff6 soundtrack: 10/10). SO please dont overhype any game on reviews or opinions as you may ending up ruining other people's experience and expectations of the game.(not saying you cannot say its your favourite but make sure you leave the subjectivity very well implied, do not sound as if you were giving an objective view of the game).
After discovering this forum in the last few days I ended up in a thread where someone was asking how to start in the ff series and many people suggested trying it in chronological order. I borrowed ff origins which contains ff 1 and 2 and I tried them today.. god were they awful. Literally every 1-2 steps there was a random encounter and the storylines didnt really grip me. It was an awful experience but this IS OFCOURSE MY OPINION and maybe it is because I tried further titles of the series first and. My opinion is not based on the graphics but simply on the boring combat system where you basically spam x until the fight ends and once in a while cure.
Well this is all for now. Im glad I found this website and that I am able to share my thoughts about the fantastic series that is final fantasy.
Bottom line (Games completed): FF6 7 8 9 10
Thanks for reading,
Cheers

Im currently replaying FF 5,6,7,8,9 and tactics, oh memories i Should play FF 1 too. On a side note i began with FF 8 9 7 and 10, then moved to FF 6-1 and i didnt have problems enjoying them so is a shame that people cant enjoy older games and my final FF was XII.

Its not like I am not enjoying ff 1-2 because I played newer final fantasies first ... I just think they are terrible games and I have many reasons to, and I understand why there are many errors on those games as they were the firsts. The only thing that even kept me playing them a little longer was the fact that they were final fantasies otherwise I would have quit in the first 2 hours.

I understand the feeling with 2 (Its horrible plain and simple), but 1 is a hit, music, jobs and the enemies are amazing, i began now playing 1 and is still great.

The 1st Final Fantasy I played was Final Fantasy 7 back in 1997 just after it came out. It came with my playstation package I bought from Comet in Ipswich with my pocket money at the time. then i went to ff8, ff9, ff10, ff12, ffx2, ffvii:dirge of Cerberus, ff1, ff2, ff3, ff6, ff dissidia and finally ffvii:Crisis Core. i absolutely love the world of final fantasy and it has opened the door to the new world so to speak. However i will defiantly concur on ff 2, it was an appalling excuse for a game but Square as a rule and final fantasy as a rule are the most greatest games you will ever lay your hands on.

Below is how many times I have played and completed each game.

ff1: 2 times
ff2: 1 time
ff3: 1 time
ff6: 5 times
ff7 crisis core: 4 times
ff7: 45 times
ff7 DoC: 8 times
ff8: 23 times
ff9: 32 times
ff10: 15 times
ffX2: 7 times
ff12: 6 times
Dissidia: 1 time.

Currently I've just started replaying ff7: DoC

FF1 - Too many to count. It and Dragon Warrior were my two favourite games on the NES back in the day. If I had to hazard a guess, around 10ish.
FF4 - 6 or 7 times. I played this one less, but I spent more time just levelling than anything.
FF6 - 3. I didn't like this one as much as the previous one, but it was good enough to play a few times.
FFMQ - 2. I loved a lot of the music in this one.
FFA - 5. This precurser to Secret of Mana was the "best game evar!" on the Gameboy.
FF7 - 1.5. I "watched" it being beat by a buddy who ordered the Japanese release of the game. Then I played it in English. It was better when I didn't understand it...
FFT - 6 or 7 again. I've played through this more than a few times, but also ridiculous amount of hours on each playthrough. Easily the one I've spent the most time on.
FF8 - 2. Once on PS and once on the PC.
FF9 - .5. Couldn't make it to the end. I just couldn't get into the characters or the story.
FF10 - .5. Graphics were nice, but that's about it. Couldn't bring myself to finish it.
FF11 - .2. Stopped playing once progression "required" playing in a group, which was around level 15-20.
FF12 - 2. Want to play this one again. It's amongst my favorites
FF13 - 1. Wish I could get the time spent back. Waste of money, time and effort.
FF14 - .2. Played for a bit while it was free. Haven't stepped back in to see what it has become.

Currently playing no FF. Considering popping FF12 back in, but I figure they may re-release this one in high def in the future...plus Diablo 3 may swallow any of my free time for a while.

Holy shit 45 times ff7... Just curious in what interval of time did you replay all these games so many times?
Sort of since it was created I started playing it, ff7 was the first game I ever played on playstation. Id start a new game once a month and always finish the game within a week. My best completion record was 48hrs 52min from start to finish :). I had way too much time on my hands lol plus being a game tester has its perks :D

Guess should jump on the train...

FF1 - 1/2 way through. Might pick up again.
FF2- 1 time. Not planning for another play-through soon.
FF3- Stuck. Hoping to re pick it up and try again soon.
FF4 - 2 times. Planning for a 3rd in the future. Perhaps next year.
FF5- 1 once. Not planning for another play-through yet.
FF6 - 2 times. Planning for a 3rd sometime this next year.
FF7 - 6 times. I problery won't replay this game for a while...
FFT - Never played and frankly... not interested.
FF8 - 4 times. Playing for the 5th time right now.
FF9 - 4 times. Planning for another play- through in the future. 2014ish.
FF10 - 3 times. Planning for a play-through next year or 2014ish. Depends on Life.
FF10-2 1 once and frankly.... once is enough. Never again.
FF12 - 1/2 way through and sold it. Not playing it again.
FF13 - 5 chapters in. Sold it. Not playing it again.
FF 13-2- Stopped playing when found out about the ending. Planning to sell it.
