For a first attempt its really not thats bad, a bit on the empty side though you havent gone overboard with effects. Somethin a lot of people do when they start out (myself included)
Uhm the best advice i could give would be to look up tutorials. Thats the best and quickest way of finding out how to blend, use brushes etc and basically how to use all the features that photoshop has to offer.

Even if you look up tutorials, tinker around and see what happens when you do this or that. Don't be the least bit afraid to experiment. You never truly know what you can do until you try it out. Remember, if you don't like what photoshop just did, just pres Ctrl+Alt+Z.
