Hey folks. I just joined up a few days ago, as I'm re-playin FFVIII right now and wanted to post a question. Always thought about joining a forum, so I finally did it. Anyways, I have been thinking about getting back into some gaming and stuff, but I never had the money for it when I was younger and now that I am older I have the money (and a little bit of free time) I feel like there's SOOO much stuff out there these days, and a lot of the big games that I hear about are MMO's. I was wondering: what is the time commitment to fully play and enjoy a MMO type of game? Can I go a day or two at a time without playing it? Is this the kind of game that where there's like really hardcore people out there who make it impossible for "part-timers" to make it? Let me know what your thoughts are on this. Thanks.

I can only speak for World of Warcraft, since that's the only MMO I play, but you can kind of choose how much you want to put into it. When you're leveling up, you can definitely leave it for a day or two, in fact the game somewhat rewards you for doing that, as you get double XP for being "rested," which you get by leaving your toon parked in an inn or capital city for several hours. As you get to end game content, it can become a little bit tougher to stay away for too long, but there is a good number of folk who'll only play on the weekend, or a handful of days during the week. You can manage to do that and still stay current, more or less. Just a matter of how committed to progressing you are.

As far as people who make it difficult, yeah, there are those types, as there are all over the internet. But for the most part, they're avoidable and/or ignorable. So they really shouldn't pose that much of a problem for you.

What he said.

Generally speaking only playing a few hours throughout the week really isn't an issue, depending on how committed to leveing and whatnot you are. Most people you start with will easily out level you at first, but if you only play for a few hours each week I wouldn't lose heart as most of these people are like me and get burned out and leave the game for something else. You'd easily catch and then dust these types of people if you maintained interest, sadly enough you actually may get more enjoyment from the game by playing the way you do, versus how they do.

Once you get in that top little nook, even if you're on for just a few hours a week I think you'll do just fine if you managed to rope a few decent friends during your climb up.

As TTT said, I can only speak for the games I've played. It's always different from game to game, but generally not too much. I'm sure you'll do just fine playing just a few hours a week. That's how I made my way to the top of Diablo 2 "back in the day".
