Currently one of the fastest growing sports around right now. MMA has been around for years, but in past years The Ultimate Fighting Championship(UFC) has sky rocketed the fame of MMA. As a person who's watched MMA since I was young, and trained for years, I love this sport more than any other.

Some people look at it as two men "rolling" on top of one another, but that's just ignorant talk from people who know nothing of fighting. Mixed Martial Arts is exactly what it sounds like, two fighters are allowed to use any techniques they want from martial arts around the world. With basic rules such as no spiking elbows, poking of eyes, pulling hair, and etc.

The more notable martial arts used such as Muay Thai, Kick Boxing, Chinese Boxing, Judo, Roman Greco Wrestling, Clinch fighting, Sambo, and of course Brazilian Jujitsu, but you are not limited to those examples. And there are 3 basic ways to win by either KO/TKO, Submission, or Decision.

Some people compare MMA to boxing, which I hate. I consider boxing to be a very one sided game plan, with only punches as your weapons. MMA views the full scope of fighting, whether the fight goes standing, or takes to the ground. MMA fighters are not just boxers, they're the whole deal.

Not convinced yet? Here's some video from UFC 80, the last UFC event held on January 19th:
Marcus Davis versus Jess Liaudin

BJ Penn versus Joe Stevenson

If you like that, search the internet for things like UFC, PrideFC, WEC, and M-1, best Mixed Martial Arts Organizations out there right now. PrideFC is no longer around, but its still nice to watch their videos :P.

I love watching UFC, its one of my favourite sports to watch. I tried kickboxing for 3 years and brazilian Jujitsu for 1 year but didnt have time to continue it once I had my son.

Ah, I remember talking about this with you in the SB. I've seen UFC yes, but only a few episodes. It was a fight between Ken Shamrock and this other young guy (forgot his name) who claimed the victory. I remember thinking, "Oh wow, I didn't know that Ken knows martial arts too and not just wrestling."

Anyway, I wouldn't say I'm familiar with MMA in general, but I do know a thing or two about boxing, jujitsu and ninjitsu. I know several "deadly points" in the human body and although I wouldn't dare test it out to see just how effective it is, I think I kinda have an idea how to deliver the attack if need be.

Am I a good fighter? Hell no. xD In fact, I was told that I whine too much whenever I block an attack (it hurts my forearms). I have sensitive skin and tend to bruise easily. I'm still training though, although nothing professional, whatsoever.

Let's see...favorite MMA would have to be Muay Thai at the moment. You can seriously break some bones...

The only martial art I have learnt is judo, which I did for a few years. I regret giving it up as I really enjoyed it, and I think the reason I stopped was because I didn't like the people in my class. X)

I don't think the classes I used to go to still run, but if I could find a new class I would seriously consider taking it back up. I loved it because I've always been a bit of a weakling, but in Judo you learn how to use your size and weight to your advantage, and I eventually found myself being able to throw men literally twice my size (seriously, I was about 10 at the time xD) over my shoulder.

Ive only just started to get into martial arts again since i gave up kickboxing a few years ago. The matches that ive seen go a bit slow over the first round or two but can speed up. Although generally i prefer the tai boxing matches.

I used to watch UFC with my cousin all the time but recently we've been getting bored of it.

We don't seek it out anymore but if it's on the TV then we'll happily watch it for hours on end.

Im a huge fan of MMA, its a lot more exciting than watching a heavyweight fight in boxing. I'd rather spend my money watching this than boxing, except for middle and light weights

I'm only a fan of UFC all dat other stuff i don't know.

I can't believe people posted here :O! Took long enough >.>

Yeah XD, I'm pretty sure you're talking about Tito Ortiz Vs Ken Shamrock, which they fought 3 times, and all three Ken lost lol. Nothing against Ken but the sport evolved a lot faster than he could handle :P.

With a lot of old karate and kung fu martial arts, many of them are meant for self defense tactics. Such as using your opponents sensitive arteries, or tendons. I've personally been kicked in the liver during savate training, and it hurts, bad... XD

And if you want to learn muay thai, just one thing I'll say for advice.. be tough. Muay thai is brutal lol, get a lot of cuts and bruises from that kind of martial art. To give an idea to people in what kind of general martial arts MMA fighters learn I'll list a bunch and what style they are.

Grappling: Sambo, Kempo, Judo, Catch Wrestling, Roman Greco Wrestling, Collegiate Wrestling, Shoot Wrestling, Brazilian Juijtsu, Clinch Boxing, Shan Shou, Sumo(weird, but effective in ways lol).

Striking: Shoot Boxing, Chinese Boxing(Wing Chun), kickboxing, Muay Thai, Savate, Some Forms Of Karate like Shuri-Ryu and Kyokushin Karate, GaidoJutsu.

And believe it or not MMA fighters are more technical than people think. Attacking the most sensitive of areas to topple your opponent is part of the game. Attacking the inside of the leg with kicks to hit main arteries, which causes immense pain. Body locks to suffocate or cut off blood to the body. Pressure on joints and bones to cause fracturing, inflammation, and breaking.

All those are things you learn to do in MMA, not only that but learn to defend if ever in a compromising situation. And a lot of boxers will say boxing is more technical, but they couldn't be further from the truth. I think it takes great skill to learn all the weak spots in the human body and exploit them :P.

I'll even list amazing fighters for you to look up and what their specialties are:
Fedor Emelianenko - Grappling - Sambo
Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic - Striking - Kickboxing
BJ Penn - Grappling - Brazilian Juijitsu
Anderson Silva - Striking - Muay Thai
Randy Couture - Grappling - Roman Greco Wrestling
Georges St. Pierre - No real particular style, well rounded in Muay Thai and Brazilian Juijistu
Wanderlei Silva - Striking - Muay Thai
Kazushi Sakuraba - Grappling - Catch Wrestling

All great in their own aspect, so look them up, and be amazed people ><!!!

And Suki, get to training, I need to see you elbowing and kneeing people soon!!

Boxing is one aspect of fighting which is striking with the hands whilst MMA encompasses all aspects of fighting so if you're looking for a true perspective of who the best fighters in the world are then look no further than MMA.

That was an interesting read. xD And I've started working out again (doing those perfect push-ups), so this summer I'll definitely be getting back to boxing. I'm not sure about kicking though. I loved doing it in my preteen years, but now...er, don't think so. Although I'm sure it'll become handy anyway. We'll see how it goes.

I'm an MMA fan. I follow the UFC, used to follow Pride towards the end, and I recently started following Dream and Sengoku as well. It's a pity that Zuffa shut down Pride though. There will probably never be an MMA promotion that big in Japan for some time.

Favourite fighters would be:

Lyoto Machida
Wanderlei Silva
Kazushi Sakuraba
Ricardo Arona
BJ Penn

Some of my favourite heavyweight bouts

Rashad Evans and Lyoto Machida are gonna clash for the 205-title soon.

I've got Rashad winning by TKO, but I see it being a great fight.

I believe Rashad's fluid style matches up well with Machida.

Hahaha Fedor is a beast! That fight against Crocop was truly something to behold. Probably one of my favourite HW fights.

Lyoto Machida by TKO in the second round if you ask me. Rashad is a heavy hitter and he has fast hands, but as a technical striker, he has nothing on Machida. He could try and take Lyoto down, but he has excellent takedown defense and probably better grappling as well. Rashad also always look rubbish in the first couple of rounds, and against a fighter like Machida who really feeds off his opponents' mistakes, that's going to be very dangerous.

Ken, you're right about Rashad being a slow starter, however Machida thrives when his opponents recklessly charge in ASAP. Rashad won't do that, he will be patient and wait it out, by the 3rd round he'll be fired up and causing all types of chaos. I see machida winning the first 2 rounds and Rashad using his athletecism and explosion to win the rest of the fight.

Problem with waiting it out though, is that I don't think Rashad has the skill set to do it. If he tries to wear the storm and adopt a defensive pose in the first couple of rounds, Machida will probably just pepper him with leg kicks like he did in the Ortiz fight. If he lets him do that, I don't see Rashad coming back in the 3rd.

Keep in mind though, Ortiz has never liked getting hit, plus he was a lot slower than Machida. Rashad is a lot closer in terms of speed and he on the other hand knows how to deal with kicks and punches. The Nakamura fight proved that Machida can be taken down, just not with a double-leg takedown. Tripping Machida is the best way to take him down. In the classic sense Machida is a lot more technical, but Rashad has an unorthodoxe striking style, in contrast with Machida's last few opponents in the octagon.

Well I guess that come UFC 98 we will know who's right. I say that Machida takes it though, and that it'll be over sooner than a lot of people think it will :P Also looking forward to Serra/Hughes, and Sherk is always exciting to watch.

Well said Sir Kenneth, my hat's off to you and our new light-heavyweight king
