And I'm not talking about that stuff made by AC/DC or any of those kinds of bands. That stuff is too much like Southern rock to be classified as anything else. I'm talking about the sweet, symphonic, melt-your-face-off melodies that make you wanna get up in the morning and blow something up.

As if you guys couldn't already tell my favorite band is Dimmu Borgir. But I also like Dissection, Arch Enemy, Dragonlord, Katatonia, and Emperor. So who else likes tr00 metal and what bands do you like?

I looove Dimmu, I saw their vid for Progenies ff the Great Apocalypse a year ago or so and I was hooked. I need to redownload their albums though, my comp deleted them so the only complete one I have now is Stormblåst.

Metal is such a huge genre with so many subgenres in it though...sometimes I'm not sure wtf I'm listening to. What would you call Yngwie Malmsteen, Testament and Nevermore?

The bands your listing are Symphonic black metal. o_O I do like Symphonic metal but not black/death metal. I just don't like the singing. :/

I've heard of Arch Enemy. I'm not much of a fan of them but I've heard a few of their songs. It is interesting though that the singer is actually a female.

Yeah, metal is a huge genre. You can't really tell say what is true metal or not. I am a fan of metal though but I prefer symphonic, Power, epic, Industrial, and Alternative.

-sneaks by- I don't like this genre... Maybe I'll tell my little bro about it.

What the hell was the point of your post? This topic is for discussing metal bands we like, not giving idiot posts about "oh i dont liek this music." If you want to raise your post count then do it in threads where you can make a reply pertaining to the subject. Spammer.

Anyhoo, what exactly is the difference between thrash metal and speed metal? There's a Japanese metal band I listen to called Aikaryu and I'm not sure if they'd be under speed or thrash metal:

Judging from that video I would have to say that they are more of a speed metal band than thrash. Thrash metal bands are bands like Metallica, Anthrax, Sepultura, and the like. Although Metallica can also be considered power metal and speed metal. Guess it really depends on which album you're listening to.

I like everything about symphonic black metal. Even the singing. To me the singers are easier to understand than doom metal and death metal. However I also like a bit of blackened death metal as well.

There are entirely too many metal genres. At least it's not emo.

Thanks ^_^ I always thought they were kinda the same...but...Metallica is thrash? o_O I pictured thrash metal to be something you could like, thrash around to <.<

Well I redownloaded Death Cult Armageddon and downloaded the rest of Dimmu's albums. I saw some comments on youtube that apparently only For All Tid and Stormblåst are actually symphonic death metal, and frankly, I don't care.

I agree with you, there are just too many genres for metal and it's way too confusing to label them, why can't we just stick with simpler genres like "old school metal" and "heavy metal" and "metal to scare your parents"? One thing that really bores me about metal is that 90% of it sounds the same to me, thats why I found a few I liked and stuck with those bands (i.e. Dimmu, Children of Bodom and Aikaryu).

Yeah some of there older albums like Ride the Lightning and Kill'em All could be considered old-skool thrash.

Yeah I like the "melt-your-face-off" genre of metal. Kinda similar to the "scare the crap out of your parents" genre.

If you like Dimmu then you orta try out Dissection, Dragonlord, and Katatonia. The lead singer of Emperor, Ihsahn (sp.) even did a self-titled solo album. Although it's not as good as the other stuff, but still pretty decent.

Those are their first two albums, right? I've never heard anything off those, not even on the radio.

So it has the same effect as the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark? xD

I had some Katatonia stuff at one time actually, I got kinda bored with it. I'll check out the others ^_^

Hey, question, would craptastic new bands that attract scene kids like Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold and As I Lay Dying fall into any category of metal? I can't stand bands like those, they try to scream and growl and aren't even any good at it.

Sounds like you need a radio staion like we have here. 102.1 KFZX. Every weeknight they play 30 minutes nonstop of Metallica. The segment is called Mandatory Metallica. They play any and every song that Metallica ever sang. Even some Misfits covers.

Atreyu-I would class these guys as a light hardcore band.

A7X-These guys could be considered as metallized hard rock. Nothing fancy.

As I Lay Dying-These guys could be considered as metalcore.

You can't be listening to all of that? Just write down those you listen to currently.

This is a metal thread and no one has mentioned Amon Amarth? Wow.

And WTF is TooL doing in that list of metal bands??

Dear lord, OverFjell, that's a massive list O___O But um, like Zantetsuken said, why is Tool on there? And where is Testament on that list?

I really should kick myself for forgetting to mention that I love Opeth. My first album of theirs I bought was Blackwater Park after someone had sent me two of their songs, Demon of the Fall and Godhead's Lament (which aren't even on that album, oddly enough). Then I got the rest of their albums ^_^

So Atreyu's light hardcore, A7X is hard rock and As I Lay Dying is metalcore? *makes a mental note to stay away from those genres* Actually our station DID have a "Mandatory Metallica" bit that only lasted a couple months (yes, they did call it that)...even then they never played anything from the first two Metallica albums. As a matter of fact, they mostly played the same five or six songs every day, it was a joke.

Oh, and Dethklok anybody? Hatebreed? Such obviousness!

Hatebreed is hardcore. And not a bad hardcore band at that.

Is Dethklok even a real band? I've seen the cartoon and all, but it seems these guys have No videos, No live performances, and No albums or compilations.

@OverFjell-You forgot Dimmu Borgir, Dissection, and Dragonlord. Also I am glad you didn't list that gaymetal band called Dragonforce.

Um, Dethklok: The Dethalbum? Sure it's a show where it's just two guys do everything but their CDs are selling like mad. Get you shit straight.

Dethklok started on Metalocalypse, their album came out Sept 25'th. They're basically the Gorillaz of metal.

I...hate...Dragonforce. Well, not hate them exactly, but I just find them so boring and I don't understand why they're so popular. I've only heard two songs of theirs and both bored me so much I never even listened to them all the way through.

BTW, what genre would King Diamond lie under? I've only heard their song Welcome Home and the guy's voice is hilarious but the music is actually pretty good.
