Okay, this isn't confirmed yet but apparently there's a huge possibility there will be a new protagonist in the Metal Gear series, and I'm sure Kojima said at some point they want to take a new turn with the series.

Anyways...

As Kojima was mentioning the distinction between Japanese designer driven games and Western technology driven games, he mentioned that he felt that a combination of the two methods should be used. He stated that this was the direction that he felt Metal Gear should go, and as the animation played out, a frame stopped with large letters stating: the next MGS. The startling thing was standing behind these words – a conceptual figure of Raiden stood behind this phrase with his back turned towards the screen. It was tiny, but it was distinctly the cyber ninja.

Could this mean that Raiden will definitively be the focus or the hero for the next Metal Gear Solid game? Plenty of speculation has raged online since Metal Gear Solid 4, primarily because so much was made about the end of Snake. While there obviously were no details given in the keynote, simply having Raiden present is a large tipoff to the direction of the new game.

Raiden as the main character would be awesome imo and they should go for it! Especially since he was such an awesome character in MGS4 8D

Thoughts?

Don't get me wrong I love Raiden as a character but after seeing him in MGS4 he doesn't seem like the type of character I'd want to play as (in his ninja form that is). His method of combat seems more up front and less covert than Snake's and MGS2 Raiden. I guess what I'm saying is that I wouldn't want to see MGS5 turn into a hack and slash game. If Konami insisted on keeping his cyrborg ninja form, I'd much rather see him as a supporting character (like Grey Fox in MGS1). I'd want MGS5 too maintain the game play which made it as popular as it is.

However, if they somehow made Raiden revert back to his MGS2 style of fighting, I'd gladly play as him. :D

Sorry I don't have more time to contribute as I am running out the door soon after I type this so I will edit later. Just wanted to point out that it would still be labeled Metal Gear Solid, since "Solid" doesn't stand for what half the people think it does.

It could work. May even be a prequal to MGS4, so you're playing as Raiden when he goes on his mission to rescue Sunny, and then on his mission for Big Mama. Which leads to his capture and transformation.

There's definately a story to be told. Even if it follows on after the events of 4, he can still be stealthy. Probably be alot more Gekko about instead of guards.
