Well I actually got around to reading the book after I saw the movie. I thought the movie was just way too good to be true; and afterwards I discovered that the book wast just as good; if not better.

I really loved this movie to death. I loved the romance, the friendship, and the betrayals. Not to mention the story is told through the eyes of a young girl, and the story was written by a man. lol.

Who else loved this movie?

I certainly loved it. It was kinda long though, but the scenes were wonderful and the environment was beautiful. I'll have to watch it again, actually...since I've kinda forgotten some of the storyline. =/

Zhang Ziyi is a great actress, and she pulled this one off really well. At first I was kinda worried that there would be some martial arts taking place on her part since she's well-known for that. xD

Anyway, great movie, and it really made you realize how sad geishas' lives are. Great drama...not over-done or anything. Definitely a must-see.

I saw the movie i found it to be sad...

Women should not be forced to love men...they should be allowed to give them a good slap when they deserve them like i always get.

I also did not realize geishas were so sofisticated i saw them as regular prostitutes but now i see it's a bit different.

Hmm, that's what I thought at first too, Jimmy...that their job kinda resembles that of prostitution, but somehow, it's different - more fancy and elegant in a way, but definitely not prostitution. They're entertainers, but sleeping with men is sometimes required. I don't know, it's kinda odd.

Notice that there was competition between Geishas too. The trainers make sure their students are up there, and that the customers are pleased with all their dancing and such.

I know what you mean and in a way they do have to end up sleeping with their customers but it seems that the main job that they have is to keep their clients company.

And they are not the common prostitute because there is a specific code that they have to follow and rules that they are forced to aplly.

But still i pity them because they are still used as objects.

A good movie, this was. Like everyone else says, it was pretty long. I read the book before I watched the movie since...I think I ended up reading the book first because someone gave it to me and told me to give them a summary. -_-; People and their...dislike of reading.

Great book though. Really lured me in.

Historically, Geisha's are more of artists with their dancing and shamisen and such, but I would've found it hard to believe that one would've gotten by with just entertaining alone.

Prostitutes were more so for day laborers. It wouldn't have looked good for people of respect to be seen around them.

I sort of dislike putting it this way, but...Geisha = 'High-class whores'

I'm sure those who watches it will enjoy it. My husband is extremely picky with movies, but surprisingly, he really loved this movie. I really need to get my hands on the DVD soon. I'm not sure about reading the book though...=/

I actually thought that this is one of the movies that followed the book quite well. I mean yes some things where changed, but I found the movie actually more entertaining than the book!

The real twist to this movie is that the author of the book is actually a man: Aurthur Golden. ^.^
How he managed to pull off the roll of a 9 year old girl (later a young woman) so well...I'll never know. XD
