i still dont understand how im supposed to equip everyone with materia, my main party of choice is cloud, tifa, and cid... all three of whom seem much more like melee/attack based characters then mages, actually the only person in the game i can see playing as a mage is aeries but we all know why thats not going to happen for very long...

anyhow that being the case, 90% of the materia in the game reduces strength, and the few materia in the game that ive found so far arent reducing strength are MEH...

that being the case i understand that i should still put "recover all" on everyone, and "revive" on atleast one person... ive also decided that, since there are always enemies that can not be attacked by melee, its smart to put atleast one black magic on each character, so ive given cloud bolt, tifa ice, and cid fire... now where do i stand?? there are materia i have thrown in there like "time" because haste is awesome, and "barrier" because it rocks in boss fights...

my point is i only have a few non-str-reducing materia and im wondering if theres MORE OUT THERE and where do i get it?

i currently have

cover
enemy skill
counter attack
deathblow
steal

and a bunch of summons, thats bout it... so yeah anything that will help in melee combat?? please tell

I have no very usefull advise .... stats reduce as you well know with whatever you may equip...deal with the slight stat reductions and take a few extra rounds of slashing at things...all in all its not a realy big deal....
Anyone can realy fit any role with the correct materia in place......so its kinda a moot point "roles" that is...

1st of all lildemon you should try to attain the Long Range materia to attack enemies that fly, its in the materia cave near Fort Condor . Unfortunately Deathblow takes some time to get results from, before its mastered it only has a 1in 5 chance of hitting but once its mastered its increases to 1in2, not bad huh?

Well the Summon materia dont actually reduce strength only HP, there are no strrength+ materia.....only speed and luck, HP & MP.....The best way to overcome Strength- effects of materia is to have 1 Character use only Physical Attacks.

Set them up with Cover, longrange, 1 heal materia+All, and this next point is not used by many people if you use a Hyper(item) you put the Fury status on your fighters,
this causes there Limit levels to increase X2 but reduces hit% by 15%, now thats a small downside for increased limit gauges!

When you get deeper in to the game post again and l will impart more wisdom lol?

i think im near the end of disc 1, il remember to get that long range, would deffinatly help... fort condor??? is that the place where you fight the shinra near the begining? can i get to that cave ANY time? or have i already been in it?

anywho right now in the game i just gotto the point where cloud went(spoiler) apeshit and gave sephiroth the black materia highlite to read, i dont know how to do the spoiler tag

No you can got there anytime............Did you get all the items in temple of the ancients?
Oh well its to late now....hey heres 1 if you equiip one of your guys with the recently acquired Gigas Amulet(?) that person gets +30 strength....but no materia growth you got it from the demon wall boss

yeah i used a walkthrough during the temple of ancients, i hate walkthroughs but there was lots of stuff there i didnt want to miss

Hey you have to edit your last post, they don't like it when you write like that dude!

Hey did you get the long range materia?

Its near the cave entrance from the chocobo ranch side to the right of the screen.when you change screens you have to walk along the left side to see a vine, climb up that and there you will see a pink materia orb?

its the only one there is in the entire game so be careful with it!

The best thing you can do is place fighters in the front row and magic in the back. If you have the long range materia you can place whoever has it equipped in the back row. Thing is in the back row it takes a percentage off how much you attack but it also makes the enemies physical attacks weaker.

To make things easy get the best weapons at each shop and keep upgrading. Your characters will start doing great damage fast. Its really not hard to beat minor enemies and with bosses, its best to use magic.

If you need more power try leveling up, that will boost your stats. Another way to boost stats is by using Sources, those items you come by. Power Source, Guard Source... They will permanently raise a stat.

For unlimited Power Sources, you can morph Heavy Tanks at the Gongaga Reactor once you have the morph materia.
For unlimited Magic Sources, you can morph Unknown 3's at the crashed Gelnika, but that's a bit further into the game. They can be a bit of a challenge (they inflict status ailments if I'm not mistaken), so make sure your levels are decent.

Whenever i use a character as a predominantly physical fighter, i tend to steer clear of the Deathblow materia, yes the crit hits are awesum, but it misses alot, and i tend to use the 2x slash/ 4x slash materia (Obtained on the sunken Gelnika) another good point, although they are a physical fighter i always have them with a Cure Materia, just in case, The Fury status effect for your physical fighter is a must have, with the increased limit gage fill speed you can rocket off bravers and what not (my physical char is normally Cloud) at a better rate and obtain the stronger limit breaks faster.

actually i did get some decent stuff... i wanted to spread my materia around so each char was good, and not rely on just one character...
beat the game and sephiroth total fight time was about 3 minutes believe it or not...

so i had cloud with a metric ton of HP up, Counterattack, Alexander, Counter+ultima, and cover and E-skill (for big barrier, and he was a hell of a tank)

i had Tifa with 2x atk, paired with zero bahamut, neo bahamut, and typhon, some hp ups recover all, etc

and i had Red13 paired with Deathblow+added slice, even if the dblow missed he still got a hit in, and i had him equiped with a slashall aswell... gave him Hades+added effect, totally obliterated trash it was great

other stuff i had on i dont remember who: full cure, raise, elemental+bolt filled all my empty slots with Hp Pluses

and of course the ultimate weapons for all of em :-) cuz there so easy too get

i always evened out my materia across the three chars, but i only ever really had one physical fighter, i also tended to have either a summoner and a black mage, and good pairings for summons are
Phoenix - Final attack (hmmm, i wonder why)
KOTR - HP absorb (HELLOOOOOOOO HEALTH)
Hades - Quadra magic (Bish Bash Bosh Baby)
W summon, KOTR with Hades (as shown in combo's above) and then mime, and nothing will beat you
