Well, I notice that with FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX that you cannot switch the Main Character out. Wtf? I would've liked to work with a different group. ya know? Why did they make it to where you couldn't switch him out?

So, What do you think about switching out the main guy? Only time in IX you got to do that was right at the end. So, your thoughts?

I liked the fact that you couldn't switch out, because then you really got the feeling that that character was actually the MAIN character. Plus, the main character was necessary to be there in the various cutscenes and stuff, and it wouldn't make sense if he wasn't in your party.

Although, I guess other characters that aren't in your party show up randomly for events. I just think it's to emphasize the importance of those characters. Yup.

Well the main character in these games is the tank of the party so he's quite vital. In FFIX it didn't matter that much for me since you can fiel up to 4 characters in a party. But in FFVIII it was quite annoying....I always wanted to have a Quisty/Rinoa/Irvine party....and I did....but only a few times. It is true that Squall is the real damage dealer but....I wanted the three mentioned above.

I think we should be able to switch the main characters out too...because then it will give us an opportunity to free up one more space and level one of the remaining characters.

As a player who likes to level up ALL the characters, I find it so frustrating that I cannot switch the main character for another one. I'll have that main character be level 99 with a few other characters, while the other one or two are several levels behind.

I like to balance it out, you see.

I would have loved to have been able to switch characters, it would have so evened my levelling up more. It felt like that 3rd spot was wasted on a level 100 char when I was training >_<

I thought forcing you to have that one permanent character was good in plot terms to make them central - it only annoyed my in IX 'cause of the job system. Apart from dyne Zidane was rubbish!

Well I like the idea of having a "team leader" or so to say. Even if you don't necessarily like the main character, he kind of grows on you.
In FFXII for instance, when you had the option to take Vaan out of your party, I felt like, even though you play as Vaan for the first 3 hours of the game...as soon as you're able to switch him out and never look at his face again...the whole game just seemed to lack an official "leader" from there on out.

I would of loved to play as Red XIII in FFVII or even Cait sith. Though i suppose them riding a Chocobo would be kinda weird :]
but in my opinion Cloud was the perfect "front man" for the job of saving the world, and when he was out of action, Cid was the right man for his replacement.

Other than for levelling up your characters, i think having one lead character is a great idea, it allows the player to really get to know who your playing as. The only usefullness of being able to change your leader is simply for levelling, In my opinion! :]

RedXIII rode the chocobo before all you have to do is have tifa on the team let her ride in goldsaucer take her off then bring redXIII. Have to have the gold chocobo. I don't know about Cait Sith?
Back to subject i think they should've had a rule after they reach there max level they can be switched off cause you had other peolpe to train it just wasted exp.

I really would have loved it if you could switch the main character out, at the moment it's a real problem with FFIX, Zidane always ends up being 7 levels higher than everyone else >< It would have been more useful if I could switch him out so I could have two four-person parties.

i think the reason why it is like this is because for example in VII it is clouds story and he is the main character therefore he is present in all battles as he is the main person that the other characters offer to join along on his journey to help out and save the world alongside him.
On X its a different concept as even tho tidus is the main character its not exactly his story he is present to join the guardians for yuna. therefore he is not the main person who people have joined so he is able to be removed from the group as he is equal to the other characters.
In XII vaan isnt the person who the story is directly about either, the group is formed from different people offering to join and help out and was not formed directly by vaan therefore different characters can be kept in and taken out of battle.
