I'm looking for a really healthy religion to stick my nose into. The problem though, is that I'm very opposed to mainstream religions such as Catholicism and Christianity. I'm not in it for the history, or for the salvation; I actually don't believe most of the things that mainstream religions teach to begin with.

A good example of what I mean would be...say...a cooperation that starts small, grows over time, then reaches it's peak. Once the cooperation reaches the top, it's administrators grow selfish, ignorant, and egotistical. The same can be said for mainstream religions...to an extent.

I'm mainly interested in this topic for the spiritual, or meditational journey, so to speak. How to become more in touch with yourself, more aware, and more self controlling.

Well I would suggest you just take a class on world religions before you decide. sometimes it is just best not to choose any one to follow, but take things from from each one to live by and help you grow. Choose what you believe in. come up with your own thoughts, but remember that in any good religion, there is that Idea of selflessness.

I personally am Catholic, but I have many thoughts and veiws on certain things that can almost be considered blasphemy, but they are things I have come to realize by looking out of just the Catholic beliefs. The Late pop John Paul II sometimes talked about how there was no single absolute correct religion. But each does have there own comunity.
If you don't feel you need that comunity, I would suggest to make the religion you choose your own, and something that you can cherish and believe.

Sometimes I do wonder if it would be okay to just make up my own religion and not tell anyone about it. XD

Well...if you're in it for pure spiritual aspects, and meditation and what not, and lack of dieties and stuff, I would say Taoism or Buddhisim.

Personally, I've looked into every religion I can lay my hands on, and none of them have really convinced me for this or that reason...but this isn't about me, it's about Rhea

Although, Taoism and Buddhisim is more of a philosophy then a religion...but if you're not looking for salvation or a real worship of anything, then it sounds like a philosophy system is more of what you're looking for, not a religion

I really like Philosophy actually. Just anything really to keep me occupied and keep my mind rolling. ^__^

I have only touched a little bit of Buddhism in history class back in highschool, but I'm not quite sure what Taoism is!

You should really look into it, you might find it enjoyable, and it's definitley interesting. I considered myself taoist a while back, but not really anymore, I don't really call myself anything anymore other then "agnostic"

Anyway....Taoism is similer to Buddihism, except it started in China, and it's based a lot around the eight triagrams known as "Bagua". There's a lot to explain...Bruce Lee was really into it, so just about anything written by him will have a lot of Taoist philosophies in it, and the internet is a limitless source of information, so I would suggest researching both of them, and seeing which one you like better, if any. Both can get kind of confusing at times, so be careful.

Also, I would suggest staying away from "zen buddhism", because that was a form of buddihism practiced by the samurai in japan way back when, and they pretty much contradicted the whole thing, and bastardized it a lot, so stay away from anything with "zen" in the title, and you'll be fine.

Will do. ^__^
I was going to ask which was easier to start with, but you say they're both confusing. I guess I'll have to flip a coin. ^__^
