Larceny! (a question about "steal")

i was just wondering (and i hope i dont sound incredibly stupid for asking this) if anyone knows if any external factors effect the success rate of zidane's "steal". i know if you get master thief, it increases your chances, but during, say, a boss battle, sometimes i'll steal, like, 87 times in a row but to no avail. i dont know, is it based on enemy hitpoints or chance or what? i'd greatly appreciate any feedback

I might be on a crapwalk but I think that your success rate of stealing items from bosses and monsters is partly determined by your Luck, so if it is low your success rate should be lower. But I'm fairly sure that there's others factors involved as well just to make you confused.

I've never been able to steal off some bosses, like getting some flute effort of Gilgaris or w/e its called, I'd steal until I just gave up, but it's not only me with that one, I believe Saix and uh, I think Oswald couldnt steal that item either

There were a couple other bosses I had that problem with aswel, yet I'd fight another one and steal all the items one after another, so I reckon its either just pure luck or the rate of being able to steal is different per monster or boss or whatever, and I think that flute thing was like a 1 in 1 million chance

I think it all comes down to how useful the items are, stuff like potions and armour seems to come easier while weapons like the mithril daggr (from sealion) can take some time compared to getting stuff like echo screens.

That's the basic system, Oswald, yeah. Bosses at least has a drop table like this;

1/256
8/256
64/256
256/256

The most powerful items you can steal from a boss are of course 1-8/256 while stuff like Potions or Ether/Elixir are 64-256/256. But then again, your attributes also plays a part, which might be why you sometimes don't get an item the first time you steal. I think I read somewhere that your Spirit also plays a part in this along with Luck.

1 in 256!!! But then im sure i was stealing from Ark for like ever to get a holy lance, But i got the mythrill dagger from sealion! whoop! i think you just have to get lucky i guess. but it does suck how it takes ages to get the item you want to steal.

Some bosses are extremely difficult to steal from because they have better items to steal, don't be fooled if you get some elixer or something, he's hiding something nice from you. I think theres an armor called thiefs gloves that greatly increases chances to pilfer. I forget where you get them, I think they might be at the auction in treno.
