J.K. Rowling has a new book... and it's not for kids. The author has signed a world English deal with Little, Brown, selling print, e-book, and audio rights to her first novel for adults. David Shelley, publisher of the Little, Brown Book Group in the U.K., will be editing the work, which is currently untitled; he brokered the deal with Neil Blair of the Blair Partnership. Rumors have surfaced that Little, Brown was given an exclusive on the work.

LB said that, along with the book's title, it will announce a publication date and plot details later in the year. In a statement Rowling said: "Although I’ve enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series.... The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry's success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life."

This news comes after much speculation about Rowling's next moves in the publishing world. Last year, she announced Pottermore, a new Web site that would offer a deeper window into the Harry Potter universe. Pottermore launched in beta in October 2011 as a solo project, hinting that Rowling might be looking to leverage her brand outside of the print system that made her famous. (The site has still not gone live in any official capacity.) This deal, however, indicates that the author is, for the moment at least, not done with traditional publishing.

In case someone doesn't recognize JK Rowling's name, or the significance... Rowling's the author of the Harry Potter series.

Will be interesting to see if people camp outside bookstores waiting for their pre-orders.. lol

Cue the people who will inevitably compare this to Harry Potter, complain about how it's nothing like Harry Potter, and how this totally lacks the magic of Harry Potter and how she should totally write another Harry Potter book instead. Ideally about Harry going through a midlife crisis, and his marriage to Ginny is starting to hit the rocks. Funnily enough, that would actually be a really dull read.

I welcome a novel from her that has been planned from the word go to be orientated at adults. Perfect for the now-adult fans of her that have been following the Harry Potter books from early on. She's perfectly capable of captivating an older audience as well as the young. The Harry Potter series was originally touted as being something for the younger readers - children's books essentially - until she cranked up the grim and dark factor and evolved the series into what it became by the later books. It's been quite a remarkable shift.

I'm glad she's done writing Harry Potter.

I think everything's resolved with the last book & there's no reason to revisit.

The typical approach would be for an author to fabricate lame reasons to continue a storyline, beating a dead horse to milk a franchise for all its worth and whore insta-bucks off brand name recognition. I've seen it with other series. I don't think its as 'cool' as some think.. But, who knows, eh. :elmo:

I give Rowling credit for trying something new and for leaving her publisher who is probably begging her to write more HP books due to what a massive cash cow it is. At the very least, she'll get a better deal out of it and more creative freedom.

It will be interesting to see where she goes next, and how well it does. Part of me thinks if I were JK Rowling, I'd have done a Harper Lee and never written anything again. But then I'm not JK Rowling!

I'm really happy to see this. Any more HP stuff would just feel tacked on and would probably not add much to the universe.

I think this will be a purchase for me, but I'll wait for some more info on the story. Like Silpheed said, we already know that she can write books that nod towards adult territory so it should still be well written.

Again, glad she's moved on to other stuff :)

I admire her decision to branch out and do something different, and I do have every confidence in her ability! The Harry Potter books are testament to the fact she has a very imaginative mind. That series was carefully constructed, well paced, full of memorable characters, well-written, etc.

If her planning years for Harry Potter are anything to go by, it's possible she has been thinking about the story of this book for quite some time. :) I am very curious about plot details!

Big fan of the HP series. I grew up reading it :D So yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to whatever she writes next. So far from what I've read virtually no details have been revealed so it's anyone's guess at this stage as to the plot etc.
