I'm a bit confused, I was playing XII and was chaining the Urutan Yensa then I realised that when you get longer chains, and you walk into the items to pick them up, all your characters get a health boost(?). For example, my chain was about 20-ish and an enemy just dropped an item resembling an hourglass in a green circle. I walk over to it to pick it up, then all of a sudden all my characters sparkle and a green number appears on each of them, which looks like they had just recieved HP. But I always forget to look so I am not sure if they are getting HP or not. Can someone explain this phenomena to me?

As you grow a longer chain you gain a higher likely hood to gain better items and also Recover amounts of HP or MP, its a handy little think to help you chain for longer

You can also get a free shell/protect from picking up loot.

Each time you level up a chain level (Which means killing one type of enemies over and over again) you get more loot and a chance to get HP/MP/shell/protect. Its a great installment to the game.

You don't actually get better items, just the chance of the drop increase. Here's a list of the chances for each Chain Level. Starting from Stage 1 to 4 from the left:

Very Common: 40%/45%/50%/55%
Common: 25%/30%/35%/40%
Rare: 3%/6%/8%/12%
Very Rare: 1%/2%/3%/5%

There's also a chance of it restoring your HP and MP. Or buffing you with Protect and Shell.

THat's pretty much all but there's one last thing:
The amount of HP you get from picking up the item is directly proportional to the enemy's HP, as Urutan items usually restore only 50-100. Compare that to high-level Abysteels in the Henne Mines whose items restore about 1000 HP.
