Is Maechen an unsent?

I was pondering this the first time I played through the game, and I've been thinking about it at every subsequent playthrough. Thing is that he looks uncannily like the statue of High Summoner Oholland with the tall hat, the cloak, and the beard. So what do you guys reckon? Is this an easter egg left for us fans to discover or am I just seeing things that noone else is seeing? :P
 
Nope, you are correct, he is an unsent.. It is so revealed in the final conversation you have with him... though the age of his death is unknown
 
We actually learn that he's an Unsent in X-2. He doesn't know what happened or when, but it's probably safe to assume that, with him being alive in the era of Shuyin and Lenne, he died in the Machina War.

Didn't noticed the similarity between himself and the statue though. :gasp:

I wonder if there's any way he could still be High Summoner Oholland though. If an unsent was to summon the final Aeon, would they still be able to linger among the living? Technically they wouldn't die like a living summoner would I guess, and there doesn't seem to be anything in FF X or FF X-2 indicating that they can't do it. Nor is there anything indicating that they can do it though.

However, Machen isn't that close to Ohalland, although I can see what you mean.

Here's the concept art for Ohalland and for Maechen.

Maechen appears to be considerably older, with a huge schnoz (his word) and glasses, plus he's more stooped. And the pope hat!

Yeah, I can see the similarities I guess but like... when you put them right next to eachother and compare then you can tell there's no way its him. Good observation though... that would have been a real good find.
 
Funny I found this... Just yesterday I reached Chapter 5 in FFX-2. I've been going for 100% completion so I just got to watch the final scene with Maechen. What's odd though is that RIGHT before that scene with Maechen you view the scene with him on the Celsius after Yuna's concert. Whenever Maechen was talking I looked over to my husband and said, "You know, this guy really looks like he should be dead...". I come to find that he is dead about 15 minutes later... lols
 
In FFX-2, when you see Maechen's flashback of shaking Lenne's hand, doesn't he sound younger? But he's an old man spirit, so he had to have lived a decently long life before becoming an unsent, right? :huh:
 
He is deffinetly an unsent, but I do not think he is Oholland. Mostly because he never said anything about Aeons, or helped in anyway with Yuna's battle against sin. If he was Oholland, I'm sure he would have some advice. I mean, he talks about everything else. XD
 
from the last conversation that you have with him in X you learn that he is an unsent, however if you have played X-2, we are told again about him being an unsent and it clears up some of the questions about him. i wont spoil it for you though ^^
 
I don't think he can plausibly be Lord Ohalland since Ohalland was from Spira. Maechen is from the real Zanarkand of the past.
