Could you do something with them?
They have half of the good user names, and cause they are inactive we can't use the names.

Ok then you can lock this topic if you want.

I've actually raised this issue and we're currently discussing the best course of action. Thanks for reminding us, though - admittedly, it's been slipping further down the To-Do List.

EDIT:
Double-ninja'd. -__-

It generally looks bad for forums if they begin to delete members. There's nothing to say that inactive members aren't going to return one day and be active. Plus the whole deletion policy in general isn't something I like.
I do remember someone (possibly Dave) saying a while ago that if a member is inactive for a given period of time, then their name can be taken.

Hmm, wouldn't really recommend this, since if they ever try to come back... They won't be able to.

They joined early and got a good UN, good for them =P
There is something called e-mail.
I figure that changing their user name would solve most of it.

I think it was they had to be inactive for at least a year and a minimum post count...or something along those lines. :wacky:

Last time I was inactive it was 3 months.

I'm quite in favour of deleting them, tbh, for several reasons:

1) They have great usernames and never use them;
2) Changing their names would mean we'd have to find another name for them, thereby tripping ourselves up, in future, if someone wants them back;
3) If they were interested in coming back, then nothing's stopping them from doing so - they can just do it under a different username;
4) It'll make the members list less cluttered and easier to seive through.

Also there are the banned members.
They can't be just deleted but some of the names are desirable too.

On the other hand, it'd totally fuck up the forum's statistics and would look messy. Changing their names wouldn't be so bad, if it was changed to something common like "User1, User2, User2" etc.

If they got an e-mail that their name had been changed or their account deleted then they shouldn't have that problem. because they would know about it.
And not everyone changes their username every month.

Just saw your post there Horation, should probably respond to it

Deleting members is horrible for the database, and makes it really messy for people browsing the forums history as well.

plus, It lowers the number of members on the statistics, which is a bad thing for the site ranking etc, and makes it less attractive to advertisers.

All in all, not worth it just so people can get nice usernames that they'll change a month later anyway IMO.
True.

I suppose we could just continue with the whole "ask for a username if an user has been inactive for a reasonable length of time" procedure. I guess we can't make everything more convenient.

Then they properly wouldn't be able to use their old account anyways given that most browsers auto flush that stuff every month.

Mainly because you need a active e-mail to receive stuff from the admin. If their e-mail ain't active then they really don't belong here.

I have Firefox and IE both auto flushes history every month.

That is why people need to keep their e-mail up to date.

People should post when they are going to be inactive there is a forum for it.
If they don't post it there then we should assume that they gave up the site not that they just can't get on.
