What is your opinion, Did YOU think that the Characters in FFXII have a good or bad relationship?

And please feel free to answer the Poll.

I thought that they had a good enough relationship. They weren't too distant from each other. Vaan and Penelo may have been slightly distant from the others, but it didn't interfere with the story too much. They relations were O.K at best.

It never felt real to me. It never seemed like they were actually a group working towards any type of common goal and instead seemed more like a haphazard group of relative strangers somehow travelling in the same direction all the time.

This.

I really didn't like the lack of chemistry between the characters, tbh. The game was also very short on character development. Imo, characters should grow and develop over the course of the story and the main characters really didn't. They barely spoke to each other and when they did, the dialogue was very lacking. It was usually "We have to go here to find more Nethicite" or someone stating what their next action should be. It was all very dull. While I liked the story and I thought they did a decent job with the villains and side characters, I thought the main cast was kind of bland and lacking in chemistry/interaction.

i'm replaying the game again with my sister, and i can say from my perspective that they have great chemistry when shown, but cutscenes are sparse compared to other FF's. the characters aren't as wacky as previous casts, and whether that's a good or bad thing is up to preference. while they never got as close as family, i do think they had a very strong friendship by the end of the game.

Yes I completely agree. One of the main reasons I did not like FFXII is that the relationships were not there and it made the game, I dont' know, feel like it wasn't really happening. They could have at least given us more cut scenes to show some chemistry between the cast. It beats walking across a huge amount of land for several hours.

I think that certain members of the cast interact extremely well with one another - Balthier, Fran, Ashe and Basche - but others - Vaan and Penelo - don't.
Really, Vaan and Penelo just don't fit in. They're both just too...immature, I suppose.

Personally, I could clearly see how well the characters fit together, but I had to stop quite frequently to remind myself just why the hell Vaan and Penelo were in the game in the first place.

In bringing in that "how this effects the common man" element they had with Vaan and Penelo, I think they really ruined the character chemistry - not only do normal people (which is what Vaan and Penelo are, when you compare them to the others) not feature prominently as a rule in Final Fantasy games, but with this we can clearly see why - they contribute nothing to the story, make developers waste time on them when they should be developing the more interesting characters, and they're BORING.

I think the game would have been better served if these two had been left out of it entirely. They could have included Vossler or Larsa, or maybe even kept Reks alive and had him factor into it. Characters who actually had a proper backstory which tied in with the other characters.

It like there are two different "groups" to the game. Vaan and Penelo as one, everyone else as the other. Without them, I think this game would have been considerably better - lets face it, asides from the "save the princess!" sub-plot that Penelo provided, and Vaan's rather dull and unoriginal "he killed my brother!" motive, what reason to have these two in the game in the first place? >.>

Vaan and Penelo weren't suppose to be in the game. Believe it or not, Basch was suppose to be the main character. It's stated in this article as such:
"Fellow Final Fantasy XII character Basch was initially meant to be the main character of the story, but the focus was eventually shifted to Vaan and Penelo when the two characters were created later in development.[1] The development team explained that their previous game, Vagrant Story, which featured a "strong man in his prime" as the protagonist had been unsuccessful and unpopular; the change regarding Final Fantasy XII from a "big and tough" protagonist to a more effeminate one was thus decided after targeting demographics were considered"

Even though Vaan and Penelo did not contribute much to the plot I have to say I found them realistic and much bearable than many past token characters. I do wonder somtimes what it would have been like having Basch as the main protagonist. Instead of having Vaan and Penelo fill in for 5th and 6th characters I would've liked it if they used a Bangaa and maybe Montblanc. That would've been more interesting.

Even though they weren't "a big happy family" I still found them interesting and their backgrounds intriguing enough to care about what happens to them and what they go through. The only thing that bothered me about some of the characters were the design. I didn't care much for Vaan's androgynous appearance and I certainly did not care for Fran's metallic lingerie. My opinion.
