I'm confused

So I recently got into final fantasy and I'm confused about 2 and 4..

FF 1&2 are 1 and the original 2 right, not 4? Because I have 1&2 dawn of souls and 4 on the gba and I think 4 is the original version from japan correct?

This probably isn't making sense but please help me understand.
 
The original (ie, Japanese) FF1 was named FF1 in the USA
The original (ie, Japanese) FF2 and FF3 never made it to the USA until the PSX/GBA ports.
The original (ie, Japanese) FF4 was released as FF2 in the USA, as it was the second in the series to be released there. It was correctly renamed for subsequent ports however.
The original FF5 was not originally released in the USA, but made it over for the FF Anothology ports (PSX, GBA etc)
The original FF6 was the third FF game to be released in the USA, and was thus released as FF3.
Final Fantasy 7 onwards are named properly both in western and Asian releases.

None of the FF games have anything to do with one another, save for FFX's sequel FFX-2 and FFXIII is going to have a few spin offs, though I don't think they have much to do with each other either due to different characters and such.

1-6 don't have anything to do with one another so you can play them in any order.
