As far as the copyright thing, I was never taught that in school, amazingly it wasn't part of the curriculum. I made a mistake and acknowledged it when it was brought to my attention.

Agreed. Plagiarism and copyright laws are absolutely ridiculous. The only time you can get away with using a preexisting idea is if you're making a parody, and even then you need permission. And I don't think SE would go for their money-maker being parodied...

We have our papers heavily scrutinized for plagiarism.

We have to upload them to this website where it automatically scans the text for plagiarised material.

Pretty intense but it keeps you on your toes as far as referencing goes .
