I had a few problems with it. Come on Square! Use FF7's Limits and just call them trance. I seriously wasted hours bringing my trance up for tough bosses and then they went off at the easiest enemies in the game.

Also, another thing. Why is it that Zidane gets all these badass powers when he goes trance? Where do these Dyne powers come from? When I first saw it I was like oh, I guess all the characters will get amazing abilities in trance.
THEY DON'T! All they got was upgraded Stats and a few more things.

>:\ Trances were the only problem of FF9.

+ Garnet's trance just increases the probability of having the Eidolon show up and increase attack power.

+ Steiner's trance doesn't give him any abilities...it just doubles his attack power.

+ Amarant's trance causes his current abilities to be used towards ALL allies or enemies instead of just towards one...

+ Vivi and Eiko have the same trance...it allows them to cast two spells instead of one.

+ Freya's trance is very useless...instead of missing one turn during jump, she stays in the air until her trance is over...meaning...if you need her for something vital, she won't be there.

+ Quina's trance is utterly STUPID. All it does is increase the chances of eating enemies.

+ Zidane has the best trance of all the characters. Mostly they deal physical damage.

I just had a crazy thought while I was trying to sleep.
Maybe Zidane's Trance powers come from the fact that he
was supposed to be the "Angel of Death" and these powers are what he was supposed to use

Well now that you mention it; yes that's probably the answer to our question. lol.

The other characters have some okay regular abilities...
Believe it or not, Quina has some really handy blue magic...Amarant's flair skills are somewhat handy and they make him a good flexible character in battle.

The other characters have somewhat dull skills...

Quina was great.
He could do 9999 Damage with Frog Squash(You gotta eat alot of Frogs)
I still never used him.

Yeah. I always want to use Quina, but I like having stiener as my strong guy...but steiner is useless without vivi...so I always end up with either:

Zidane, Steiner, Vivi, and Garnet

or

Zidane, Vivi, Eiko, and Amarant

o.0
I hardly use the second line up though...

The first lineup you listed is really all you need.
Thief, Fighter, Black Mage, White Mage.
My FF1 Party.

The other characters come and it messes stuff up imo.
My Main Party was Zidane, Vivi, Steiner and Garnet also.

I tried off and on having eiko instead of garnet, since eiko has more powerful summons and magics...but garnet's ability to cast curaga on all members at once was just too handy. XD

I never used Eiko. I didn't liker for some reason
Maybe because Garnet used Traditional old school summons (Ifrit, Shiva, Ramuh) and Eiko used ones new to the FF World (Madeen)

Well she had some really powerful summons and magic abilities, but like you say, I like the oldschool reliability of typical white magic. XD

Did you find it odd how Vivi and Steiner were the only Character who could use each other in Battle?
I wanted More combos!
Zidane and Quina
Freya and Amarant
Garnet and Eiko
The Parties from the Temples to get to Terra, I forgot their names

LOL i was gonna say that before i even noticed your spoiler tag.
Although, Garnet and Eiko wouldn't make a good team imo, since they're both white mages, it kind of ruins the whole power mixture.
It would have been sweet to have Garnet and Zidane as a team. But I actually think Zidane would work best with Quina. lol.

I can see Freya and Eiko together too. XD

That would leave Garnet and Amarant who don't really have anything to do for eachother.

Trances had the potential to be good, but it was wasted by the fact that if you finished the battle in a Trance, the bar was empty for the next one. There were far too many times when I took a hit at the end of a fight, went into Trance and then killed the enemy straight after it. It's annoying to say the least. If that fault were rectified then Trances would probably be better than the Limit Break system from FFVII.

That's my main Problem with them.
I hated them because of that fact, I even thought FF8's system was better.

Oh god no. I hated how it was done in FFVIII. On paper it sounds good having to get to 30% of your health, but I found it a bit tempremental. At times you could be at about 20% and still wouldn't be able to get it. Too many times I just used Aura to get it at pretty much full health =\.

Just press triangle a few time and it should come up randomly at 30%.
I'm not saying FF8's was good just better than ff9's.

I get what you mean about Trance. Twas annoying when you like have one enemy left and it's about to die then it attacks you then you go into trance and DON:T use it.

they could've atleast left the gauge half full but it was emty.

Beleive me, Steiner isnt useless with Vivi ! His Sword Arts are much better than those magic sword attacks I actually neve ruse the sword magic ones except early game a bit where they're automatically in the party together.

Lategame you'll see that Steiner is your man for dealing some major damage (shock!) altho he doesnt have a lot of MP but that can be easily solved with freya in your party, his normal attack is the best of all and ever tried combining Darkside with minus strike? Use darkside over and over until you get to see that minus strike will deal more damage than darkside, also no MP cost here xD, be sure that your enemy doesnt absorb shadow damage and that steiner wont be killed :p.

@topic: Yep I hated trances, limits were a lot better and I missed them =(
