I'm planning on getting the game seen as I have enough money going in monthly, how populated is it in-game for the time being? Just wondering if I'm going to be expected to interact with anybody else or not.
How big is the general community?

Well... General Population... officially... 0... for the game isn't out yet
Minus Beta testing, the game isn't complete yet. So, you can save your money for another day.
The betas have been pretty populated and with the port to PS3, the population should increase even more. There is going to be a content finder and level sync so there should be plenty of opportunities to play with people. If there is enough interested here on the forums, we should start a linkshell.

Looks like my money will indeed be saved for another day. There's another thread for that so I won't even ask if the games will merge for PS3 and PC. I didn't know it was still in Beta testing though, I thought it'd already been officially released. Lol the game definitely has my interest.

SE does not do regional nor platform separation. There wont be any merging because everyone will be able to play together.
The general community should get bigger at official release. Expect a lot of refugees from FFXI, myself included, although I've been retired from the game for 3+years now.
