Ok, so I'm at the entrance to the tunnel of Famine. The assassin dude gives me a test. I answered one wrong. He took 2,000 Gil! Then I answer another one wrong and this weird castle-robot-thing called "Alexander" shows up and beats my ass into the ground. What's really creepy is that all of his stats were exactly 10 times mine! He also showed up when I tried to rob Quina's. What is up here?

For the path choosing, you must pick the correct sequence otherwise you lose 2000 Gil, or be forced to fight Alexander. As for the bank robbing, I don't recommend it at this stage in the game - his stats are far too high, not to mention you'll be banned for a day or two if you rob it. (successful or not)
Once you pick the correct sequence, you'll enter a series of tunnels...though I didn't choose this path so the enemies should be different. It wouldn't hurt to add that enemies SPD stat is in relation to your own. (assassin's tunnel only)

raise your life up to 300 and it'll be very easy as long as you have cure or a healthy stock of potions,

Ditto, the enemeis in the assassins tunnel dont tend to hit to high any way so you only need to worry about hitting them back and healing or you could do what I did and out evasion them to the point of ridiculous. I have 100 evasion and can;t be touched by the enemeis in tunnel of famine area 4.

No, that's just to punish players for making a mistake by choosing wrong options at the statues, or when trying to rob the bank.
You absolutely do not have to defeat it, that would be outrageous to expect that to be done at this early stage of the RPG, it's currently way too powerful for even the best players here.

Yes, Alexander is one of our favorite creations due to the amount of pawnage it can provide. So facing Alexander is like getting an instant "Game Over"
