Hi, I'm a training Anthropologist living in Japan (I'm English), and I'm doing a study on Final Fantasy culture. Can anyone tell me just what is it about Final Fantasy (all of them, or just one if you're just into one main one) that makes it so important, or at least dominant in your lives? I know when FFXIII is released in March I won't be able to talk to my boyfriend for a LONG time!

Any help would be really appreciated, along with anything that you would like to add ^_^. If you did want to help me, it would be great if you coul leave your age, sex, and nationality too, thanks!

It's important (to some anyway) because people sometimes see themselves on the characters, or it just gives us a chance to escape from the real world for a while.

Back when I had a borrowed copy of Final Fantasy IX, I felt like something big in my life just happened. The plot was interesting, the medieval feeling was awesome, the battle system is fun, and the romance is just perfect. When I was younger I could just daydream about living in that world. No joke.

I bet that's what most people see in their favorite Final Fantasy, at least the part about the features. I hope this helps. It could also be so dominant just because it's fun. :)

For me it was the combination of story, characters and music, which I felt were better with FF4-9, but other games in the series too.
That was what inititally got me into the games. I know there are a lot of games out there with storylines that probably beat the FF series, and other games with great soundtracks, and others with great characters, but FF just mixed all three well for me.

To me there is a magic in the FF series, just like people would say that there is a lot of magic associated with Disney in the world of cartoons. Other cartoons may be great, some better in different aspects, but it is Disney that has this aura of magic with cartoons. To me, FF is like that to the RPG world. Other people will disagree, but that is how it always felt to me.

The light vs dark struggles, the humour mixed in with drama, it was all balanced well in the FF series, I felt, at least until the later games (things started to go too much to the dark or depressive side a bit in my opinion, and I don't think enough balanced it out later on).

And quite importantly there were quite a lot of memorable creatures and images from the FF series. Chocobo's, moogles, tonberries, bombs, cactaur, black mages... They're all great monsters / creatures that many people will notice right away, and I like to see them in games and linking the FF series together in this way. And honestly, we all secretly want to own a pet moogle or chocobo. Anyone who says otherwise is fibbing to themselves. :monster:

I wouldn't say FF rules my life or anything (at the moment it isn't my favourite series anymore), but I would say it is important. I listen to Nobuo's music on my ipod, and many covers, and I like to imagine parts of the story or the characters while I listen to the music, and this is great. I also have FF figures, and a chocobo cuddly thing (a soft toy basically, though not very soft but I don't know what to call it), and I like to collect these things when I can, as I am filled with happy memories of these games.

The game series was a large part of my life in my early to late teens, and I'll be a fan of the first 9 or 10 games at least for as long as I live, even if I'm not constantly playing them (which I don't).

No, that's not mine and whilst it does have an amusing side to it, on the whole it probably does contribute to your question. :)

N.B. Chances are he's a Western male.
