So I wanted to put some pictures and perhaps a few legally purchased MP3s on my PS3

I inserted my USB with said media on it, and the PS3 recognised it just fine

However if I went to the photo part of the menu the USB showed up but said it had no pictures on it, the same happened in the music menu

If I go into the USB itself though all the media is there, I can even set the pictures as my wallpaper

Hmmm perhaps your USB is in the wrong format? I had to get my external HD formatted into FAT36(or32 can't remember) because the ps3 won't recognize The format usbs come in these days. But this is just an idea, it might be something else.

It's FAT32, 64-bit computing wasn't invented back when FAT32 was made.

This is incidentally why you cannot open files bigger than 4GB on your PS3 via USB - 4GB is the maximum file size for a FAT32 system.

When I press triangle on the USB, and choose 'view all', then triangle again on the image, I get the option to copy it. Then it pops up as a separate item on the image menu, and from there I can import it and stuff

I think I have basically solved the problem so

This has happened to me before (whether or not it's the same problem I don't know) but it nothing ever shows up when I just click on the "USB Device" option. So I had to go down to the "USB Device" option under music/photos press triangle and then the "Display All" option. Then scroll to the song and press triangle and then copy.

Something like that anyway.

You have already found it out. This is the same method you use to retrieve songs from an iPod device. I have also had to do this with all my USB devices with the exception of my Sundisc Cruiser for whatever reason.
