So after reading this article and then its comment, I must say, I think people are being a bit rash and ready to point the accusational finger at so and so being racist/sexist/ignorant etc.

I mean, I'm no expert on football/soccer, but surely this is for health and safety, and not a matter of prejudice? Feel free to either prove me right or wrong here mind.

As a result mind, it sucks majorly, but it seems they'll have to deal, either don't take part, or remove their headgear. The only compromise I can think of is that they have them all sign a contract that any injury caused that relates to the veil will be their responsibility. (Though tbh, I have a feeling folk who are being all "ooh, this is ignorant" now would switch their card and say "Fifa should take responsibility!")

i clicked the link expecting to see one of those full faced thingies, can't say i see an issue with what those women are wearing at all. I wouldnt say it was prejudice or anything like that, more the health and safety gone mad bull shit thats rife at the moment.

Firstly, I must say this is horrible. These women were trying to play in the Olympics, and because they were a garment that is related to religion they can't?

That is preposterous. If anything, their head garments would allow more protection against head injuries.

Secondly, this IS a discriminatory action based on religion.

They can coat this with all the "safety" bullshit they want, but it shouldn't matter.

The Olympics if for the world to COME TOGETHER, not deny one the chance to participate due to their outfit.

I swear. Everyday I hate people more and more.

Man, I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be allowed to wear those. I can't really think of any safety reasons, except maybe overheating. But still, that doesn't make any sense. I don't really care that they're banning a religious article as I care nothing about religion, but the rule itself is stupid and they should be allowed to wear their hats.

For instance, if there's a rule that you can't wear any jewelry around your neck which means it would ban a crucifix, that wouldn't be prejudiced against a religion. Things hanging around your neck in an active sport are a definite safety hazard. But a form-fitting hat-thing? Asinine to ban it.

As an aside, I have to say, their full soccer outfit looks pretty nice and modern despite its odd religious restrictions.

I don't see how something that covers the neck and ears can be banned on health and safety grounds. But FIFA have decided to ban Snoods and they are not in anyway religious. I do think it is partially motivated by dislike of Islam. I think they should let them play even if they are wearing whatever it is that they are banned from wearing. Given FIFA's lust for money they'd probably allow it if it had sponsors' logos on it.

Sports are always thought of as universally fair, and despite nationalities and race and religion it's all happyhappyjoyjoy once in 4 years. Funny thing is, the olympics and all other major sport organizations are extremely corrupt, and while I'm not exactly in love with Iran or their views on sex/gender equality, this is ridiculous and they should be allowed to play with those veils on.

Oddly enough, I'm also certain that while most people show utter disdain towards this, they'd laugh at the occasional shitstorm that comes when some women's events are made a bit more sexy with skimpy uniforms. Some people seem to be under the impression that women's sexual liberation revolves around the idea of them wearing as little clothes as possible to please men who find women's sports to be otherwise boring. Volleyball is a good example.

But, I guess those muslims just need to be told that west is best, and you better fit in, and that adulation of young men posting about your tits and ass on the internet is more important than pleasing yourself and the neighbourhood god that you worship. As long as you just don't get the idea that sports are played for ...something else than tits & ass :hmph:

(that last paragraph was sarcasm if you didn't get it)

Also, one other thing to consider:

This article, and multitude of other articles, suggest a lot of things. ".... In Iran all women are required to cover their hair in public to conform to the Islamic dress code." Notice the usage of the words "required" and "conform".

Funny, no one asked all these women of Iran about this. Again one interesting thought: the western "feminists" who rant and rave about veils generally have no idea what they're talking about. They're not actually promoting feminism in any meaning of the word, they're propagating a white secular humanist western lifestyle. Nothing more, nothing less. Burqas are a bit different, but if anyone is that concerned over veils that cover hair, the next time you see one go ask how oppressive it is. You'll be rather suprised.
