From racing your own Chocobo on disc 2, you can acquire a truckload of great items and materia, but is it possible to gain any advantage whatsoever by betting on the Chocobo races during your first visit (and an optional second visit) on disc 1? I doubt any of the higher end materia is available, but I wonder if any rare items are available at that stage purely by betting, not racing your own Chocobos?
I personally have never had any luck betting on them in my early days playing, and so have never really bothered experimenting with it in later playthroughs, once I've earned enough GP to play with.
There never seems to be any real rhyme or reason to who wins, which is what bothered me when playing the betting game. It meant I had to sit and watch an absurd race which to be fair, I must have watched anywhere between a hundred and a thousand times over my life.
