I just beat it, and it was an awesome ending but I'm a little confused who was talking at the end. The whole time, I was trying to figure it out, and for some time I thought it was Dagger, but then I also wondered if it was the character who's clip was just shown, thinking about Zidane. So, who was it? And I just read on Final Fantasy wiki, that Vivi died and it tells you at the end during the monlogue. Where does it say that?...

By the way, was there any symbolism at her dropping that necklace when she's running to Zidane? Because it seemed like it was supposed to be significant, the way she stared at it.

And lastly... FUCK AMARANT. I kept hoping they would reveal more about him... BUT NOOOOOOO.... Jesus christ, he was a pointless character.

It's Vivi, he's writing a letter to everyone before he passes away. It's not explicitly revealed but the way it's written and the fact that Vivi is the one character who isn't seen at the end of the game strongly suggests it.

And I don't think Amarant was pointless at all, they told a bit about his past, how he met Zidane, and the section of the game in Ipsen's Castle gives him a moment to take some form of centre stage. It's no less than some of the other main characters get. He's by no means pointless and I love some of his lines.

Where's the letter at the end? The writing/talking that comes up on screen I presumed was Garnet asking Zidane what happened and him replying. I can't remember Vivi's letter though. did i miss it???

The necklace falling off Garnet and as she stares at it to me, seemed like she didn't care that she was one of the last of the summoner tribe, or the Queen of Alexandria, she just wanted to be with Zidane so much. At the moment she didn't care about any of that, just to be with him once again. Well that's what I interpreted.

And I wasn't Amarant's biggest fan, and I didn't think there was that much to him. Least favourite character in IX i think, even Quina was better than him. He's strong, but Steiner is better, and Chakara isn't that great.

I always thought it was the character who was in the clip before the letter come's up on the screen

But just looking at it again this bit in the letter makes sense

I'm So happy I met everyone.. Wish we could have gone On more adventures. But i Guess we All have to say Goodbye someday
Everyone Thank you Goodbye My memories Will Be part of the sky

I don't think Zidane Finds Out vivi is dead in the Game He'll Know after the events of the ending though

Actually, it should be
Vivi's letter.
Or at least, that's my presumption, until it became a confirmed fact. Reference taken from Final Fantasy Wikia. There will be spoilers there, so beware.

And I'm rather happy to say I thought it was Vivi's letter the first time i came across it. Though I admittedly felt sad that Vivi had to
'expire' (Or 'stop', as said ingame)

The writing that comes up in the screen is Vivi's letter, or at least it is Vivi saying/writing all of it I believe. Vivi's fate at the end does tie in with the part of the game where the Black Mages and Vivi himself have to come to terms with their own mortality.

Ah i remember now, its when you see what everyone else is up to! and he says something like he'll be part of the sky! YEah I knew that was Vivi. just forgot about it >_<

Unrelated - but do you think he made his children? or manged to reproduce? (Maybe with Quina ^_^) or are they just the other mages and they decided to call him Father out of respect and all he learned?

I think he learnt how to produce more Black Mages and so they were sort of his 'children'. I can't see them being ones for sexual reproduction (do they even have genders? At the end one does say he's Vivi's son so I guess they do) but who knows.

Oh... I thought he was there at the end of the game, you just couldn't tell who he was because they all looked the same. :/

Well, I finally thought they would go more in depth when he was in the shrine saying to the Chaos Monster, "I knew a guy who constantly looked for fights. He was an idiot..." and all that, would be when he finally opened up. But even at the end, he was still insecure and selfish. If you talked to him on the ship, he says, "I can't believe I'm still here" giving me the impression that he's still complaining. I don't know. I used him so much, I probably wanted more benefit.

I always figure it was each character talking at the end. I know people assume Vivi has died at the end,but there is nothing that states that. He wasn't created like the other black mages, and it does not state that he has a limited time to live. Who knows for sure. He could just be in with the other little black mages.

Most of the things that are being said seem like something that Garnet would say. I always thought she was just talking about what happened and how when she mentions she "needs to move on just like he taught me" came after "my memories will be part of the sky" was just her letting her memories go.

The reason I thought it was each character talking was because they were each talking about things learned while traveling with Zidane. I remember when it shows Quina and afterwards the words that come up on the screen are revealed really slow, like Quina was taking it's time to speak properly.

So I guess it's just a matter of opinion. ^_^ Square has never actually released who it was at the end and if Vivi dies.

About Garnet dropping her necklace,it was to signify that she chose Zidane over royalty. The necklace was a symbol that she was of royalty and dropping it and leaving it behind was her way of 'giving up' her royalty for Zidane. Showing she cared more about him and that he was more important to her.

I liked Amarant too. It would of been nice to give a little backstory on him,but atleast it showed some of his past with Zidane.

That's exactly what i noticed too. I was trying to figure out who was talking, and at the point when I was wondering if it was each designated for each character, it showed Quina and the text coming slow. And I wondered if that's QUina trying to talk normally since it's special to him/her. But the thing about that theory is that some of the stuff just didn't seem to fit. Like Amarant, Steiner and Beatrix. Also, why did they even include Beatrix, and what did the text that came following Beatrix even have to do with her?

Wait, so if she chose Zidane, she gives up her royalty? SHe can't be queen if she choses to be with Zidane? Or is that just metaphorical?

I think it's more that she won't let her being queen get in the way of her love for Zidane. She's not giving up her throne or anything, but she realises that at that moment, what matters most is what she feels for Zidane. Besides she can always go back afterwards and pick it up XD

The thing with Vivi is he's the only who who doesn't appear at the end of them game, or at least the only character who doesn't explicitly appear. There are Black Mages, but none of them are identified as Vivi. It would seem odd to give screen time and dialogue to all the other characters but not Vivi, which is why it's more likely that the words coming up are his and his alone, and that he has passed away. I think the first point is correct anyway, the words just don't fit all the other characters, you can make a case for Garnet maybe saying some of it, but all of them? I can't imagine Amarant or Quina ever talking like that. And I've seen the post below now and I still don't think it fits, it just reads better if it's all by Vivi. But the latter point about Vivi's fate is at least more contentious I agree.

Beatrix had a good deal to do with the story, and she learned a good bit. I think she did feel alone at certain points in the game, esp when Queen Brahne didn't even seem to care about anything Beatrix had to offer. I think she was talking about how even if her and her new friends aren't together,or maybe even if she never got to see Zidane anymore, everything that was taught to her would still remain with her and in her heart. And I think she was thankful to have other friends that fought along side her, they made her feel like she wasn't alone.

Garnet would still be queen, but she was just showing him that her royalty didn't matter to her. She could still love even a simple thief. Remember how Zidane didn't think he could be with Garnet anymore after she became queen? He realized she was royalty and didn't figure a lowly thief could be with royalty. She wanted him to know she loved him for him. And if she had to,she would give up her royalty for him.

As for Amarant it says "Why I was born...How I wanted to live.. Thanks for giving me time to think." I always figured it meant that Amarant thought he was born for the sole reason to pick fights. That's how he figured he wanted to live. But traveling with Zidane,he learnt that that wasn't really how he wanted to live. He learned fighting just for the sake of fighting isn't a great way to live after all. ^_^

I always thought he was just along with the other black mages. I know it seems weird he didn't get any real screen time at the end,but I figured the message that came after the little black mages was what Vivi had to say. And I always thought Vivi was the black mage sitting by Eiko in the crowd in the ending FMV. In my opinion, I don't believe he died. The game made a point to mention that Vivi was not like the other black mages, and it never revealed if he had a small limited time to live.

I guess we will never really know unless Square releases it, and I can't see them ever doing that since FFIX seems to be one of the least FFs they are worried about. ;( Atleast it's getting playarts figurines though!

Also, was that letter part of his will or something? Was he writing it to everyone before he died?

Yeah you presume its like a group letter, could be part of his will, although I don't know what he'd have to give out, maybe his collections of staffs! ^_^

I think Vivi may live longer than other black mages, but he was still made for a purpose, and he's probably already outlasted all the other ones, and it's been a fair old slog so maybe he did 'expire'. But it would be nice to think of him having a family but being too old for adventures.

Amarant was pretty Selfish, but maybe he just does it all for show, but deep down actually cares? Like at the end when he's with the other bounty hunter, he seems warmer, maybe enriched by the experiences he's had.

Agreed.

It's very unlikely that he was amongst those little black mages. You'll remember Puck encountered them right? If he was one of them, he'll have answered him and acknowledge. But guess that didn't happen, so no.

Until recently, my last pla through even, I always assumed it was Garnet, til someone on msn told me it as Vivi, then it all made sense and it made the ending all that more sad D:

I'd always just assumed he was with the other vivis at the end, but he wasn't and thats what the letter was about. And poor Zidane wouldn't of even found out til after the game, poor love....D:

Me too, I always thought it was Garnet, writing in a diary or something. And it is sad when you realise it's Veeevs.

Poor love ^_^ Zidane would be sad, but happy he made it out of the Iifa Tree alive, and back with Garnet, so it's still a happy ending. Plus Vivi wanted to celebrate his life and all the great things he did with his friends.
