'God of War: Ascension' art leaks [update: teaser trailer too!]

And here comes the (non-final) box art for "God of War: Ascension." Sony has yet to formally announce a new God of War game for PlayStation 3, but retailers and composers seem to be doing a fine job of making it known.

Based on cover art pulled from Amazon's servers, it seems the upcoming game has ditched the Roman numerals in favor of a succinct subtitle. Of course, the important number is the Greek one -- as in where will Kratos find the ancient gods to up his already extravagant body count? (Update: It looks like the game is a prequel, so there should be some hitherto unknown bodies to skewer.)

We'll let you know as soon as we learn more about God of War: Ascension.

God of War: Ascension livestream happening this afternoon

PlayStation EU’s tweeted a livestream for God of War: Ascension will happen this afternoon on the EU PS Blog. The stream, hosted by game director Todd Pappy, will go live at about 4pm BST. Word to the wise: expect to see some first impressions going live on the game before then on a few sites.

Ascension was announced for PS3 a week-and-a-half ago.

GoW: Ascension to feature “brutal” online multiplayer

God of War: Ascension director Todd Pappy has confirmed on the US PS Blog the game will have a multiplayer mode, the first time it has been introduced into the series.

Confirming long-held speculation, God of War: Ascension will feature online multiplayer. This’ll be the first time the GoW series has introduced it in its eight-year history.

“That’s right. God of War: Ascension will feature a ground-breaking new online multiplayer mode,” said Pappy.

“We wouldn’t do multiplayer in God of War unless we knew we could do it right. That’s why I’m extremely excited to finally be able to talk publicly about it and share all the gory details with you live. I even have some exclusive gameplay footage to share with you, so be sure to tune in to see it all live.”

That all kicks off at 4pm GMT today. GamesRadar has footage of the multiplayer in action here.

Eurogamer’s preview of the multiplayer has just gone live, confirming multiple modes for the game. Details show it’ll be a team-based gameplay with the action setpieces that God of War is known for. Players will have to choose which of the four Gods they’ll be representing under – Zeus, Poseidon, Hades or Ares.

Online had been speculated since rumours on the game started spilling out last year.

GoW: Ascension is set to launch next spring on PS3, according to the game’s listing on the US PlayStation website.

Confirming long-held speculation, God of War: Ascension will feature online multiplayer.

"We didn't want to sacrifice single-player for multiplayer, neither did we want to tack [the latter] on," says McDonald. "We're definitely going full force with both."

Online play! Oh my gosh, its perfect for God of War! And thank goodness for the later part of the quote. A lot of the time hearing "will have online play!" from a series that didn't have it before, scares me. Because it feels rushed, and is very boring, or doesn't quite work right.

I just watched the Ascension trailer, and that giant-thingy looks AMAZING! But when the others came up and grabbed a hold of the giant, was that other players, or single player CPs? Also, I like that this is a prequel. I was interested in learning of his past when I played the PSP games.

It looks great. I still need 3 before I get this though.

The mode, the first of its kind for the series, was announced earlier today.
