Just a little quick question about Gau. Can he only learn monster moves from monsters you fight on the Vault, or can you go fight monsters elsewhere while you send him on the Vault?
Only on the Veldt. Moreover, he'll only learn the moves of the monsters that you were fighting when he originally went up, and the ones in the battle when he comes down. So if you fight any monsters in between and he doesn't return, he doesn't learn those moves.
I did a Gau challenge about a year or so ago. Here is some information I have for the whole ordeal.
Before reading on beware that when Gau uses a Rage in battle, he will be stuck fighting like that enemy. He will have his stats + whatever bonuses the monster had. This will last until the end of the battle.
You will get a special ability with Gau when on the Veldt. It is called Leap.
Leap on an enemy you want to learn a rage for and in time he will come back. Do NOT attack him! Watch whole scene happen without interruption.
There are 254 rages! That's right, and in order for a monster to appear on the Veldt you must encounter that monster elsewhere. I believe you have to defeat them too. Watch out cause there are some missable rages in the WoB.
The monsters appear in a semi fixed pattern. I would suggest to look up on gamefaqs a rage walkthrough. ALL enemies appear on the WoR's Veldt that appeared in the WoB Veldt. There is no need to get all of the WoB rages before World of Ruin.
Gau is probably the hardest character to learn abilities for but worth it in a true 100% completion. Also Strageo can learn his Lores there (Exclude some of the Boss specials) and Reim can sketch there too.
BEWARE this is so deadly that I even hide it in a spolier tag.
There is a glitch in the advanced version of the game. When Gau comes back you can sketch him with Reim and afterwards you MAY end up with a whole bunch of items. OR you may LOSE ALL YOUR GAME DATA!
