Well my brain is constantly turning this morning, and I'm to lazy to see if there is another thread like this one out there.

The general question is.. when you see a debate thread. Is your first instinct to post just to get your post count up? or Do you show general interest in a thread and sit down and take time to write?

Since I'm writing this thread, I'll go first.

As you've seen I pretty much have pretty lengthy follow ups. Why? Well I have a fear that if I don't explain myself to the fullest extent someone may not understand the circumstances or the situation entirely from my view. In order to be a good debater you have to relate the subject matter to your audience, without losing them in a wall of text. If you are able to intrigue someone and persuade them in a different angle, you have a great power behind your penmenship. Often times I feel the need to lay into some people, but other times, I could care less about the subject matter. In the end, I try my best to write good responses, and try not to just post to post.

As I'm sure most everyone knows, The Sleeping Forest is my favorite place in the forums. I honestly see no benefit to having a high post count on this forum. Another forum I'm a member of, you get a banner that is based on your post count, so natrually people would post-whore to get their post count up quickly just to see a newer, better banner under their name. The only identifier you have in this forum showing post count is the name under your screen name (example: mine says Blue Mage), but seeing as that can be changed, it still doesn't identify what "rank" a persons posting is at. I'll admit that I've probably posted a decent amount (2.59 posts/day before this post, and I posted a ton for the Birthweek festivities), but I assure you that about 95% of my posts go into legitimate detail for the subject matter, if not more.

But for me, I prefer to post a detailed post instead of a 1-line spam post. Even when I've posted in the Spam Collesium, I still go into more detail than I should. I will admit though that I probably go into too much detail, even on a debate forum and end up making a novel out of a simple question. But yeah, I prefer to add as much detail as needed to justify my thoughts instead of continuing my debate over several posts. Quality > Quantity, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm a Quote and Respond type of guy. So pretty much, something has to set the ol' alarm bells to ringing to get me to respond in a debate. Or if it's a topic close to my interests/knowledge/etc. My post count is irrelevant to me, so I just wait for something to piue my interest, and then go from there. Pretty simple, really.

I'll normally search the Sleeping forest, mainly cause that's where topics i'll wanna talk about would be. Post count, meh, i mean i don't mind raising it but it's not like i make a conscious effort to raise it up. Most of the time i'll post my opinion and leave it be, unless someone has somethign to say, in which i'd normally reply. I don;t post super lengthy as some people, not that it's a bad thing, but i post enough to get my point across.

I usually try to write A LOT so that my reply won't be a spam.
I know that 2-3 lines is enough (in most cases) so that it won't be considered a spam, but I still afraid of doing spam.
Probably because the first time I learned about forums, I didn't know what is "spam" and just wrote many short replies of a few words.
I then was warned by one of the admins and it seems as I afraid of being scolded since then.

When I come to a thread, I always read the first post (no matter how long it is) and some other users replies. When I am sure that:
1) I have something to say on the subject
2) There is a reason to write what I want as it wasn't already said by others (for example if someone asks for help and someone else already helped him)

If those two conditions don't meet, I leave the thread.
As for post count. One part of me want a huge post count (I am kinda competitive) but the other says it isn't that important. While I usually search for threads in order to increase my post count, I still sometimes write long replies in forums in which the post count is disabled.
