Interesting bitch. Probably the best introduction to any thread ever. That point aside, I think she's one of the most interesting characters every created by Square-Enix. Her character design alone is not that impressive. She belongs to a rat race of dragoon knights with one of the weirdest overall looks of any character from any game. However, what she's based on and the quarks associated with her and her race is really quite intriguing.

To start off, she's based on the Norwegian mythos of Freyja. Freyja is the counterpart to Odin, which I will discuss more later. She was not only the goddess of sex, beauty, attraction, and love but also the goddess of war. It does kind of relate to Final Fantasy IX's Freya. She not only was suppose to be the most beautiful of her race but also an incredibly fierce warrior. It is also interesting that Cleyra was destroyed by Odin, Freyja's Norse counterpoint. Out of all the different summons it is curious that there is such a blatant and obvious connection.

Also, although Ireland is not even remotely considered to be "Norse", I do think a lot of the cultural traits of the Burmecian and Cleyran people are reminiscent of Ireland. It is hard to tell without voice acting but I think you could easily add a gaelic accent to any of the Burmecian/Cleyran people and have it seem completely normal. BustaMo can contest to that. Their style of dress and speech seems to be very atypical of ancient Irish culture. You also can notice a very clear "Irish River Dance"-esque dance when the Cleyran people attempt to strengthen the sandstorm around their village. Also I think "Sir Iron-Tail Fratley" is a reference is Micheal Flatley, the famous Irish river dancer.

Interesting. Freya is one of my favorite characters from IX.

I did notice the Irish dance she and the other rats did but not the clothes, but not that I look at her outfit the thing on the front does look a bit Celtic.

Oh, hell yes.
Yeah, I would say 'interesting bitch' is the best way to describe her... Though I never thought of her as 'Gaelic' until now. I did think of the Celeyra dance as being Celtic in nature, but I never put two and two together.
Also, Frigg is Odin's counterpart. Freya (spelt 'Freyja' in Japan, a more accurate spelling) was the Vanir goddess of beauty. However, there was an incident, and the Vanir (read; fertility gods) and Aesir (read; war gods) traded some of their members. The Aesir got Freya, her brother Freyr, and some guy whose name I can't remember but was also really important. The Vanir got a pair of losers who no one cared about.
Sorry 'bout that last bit. I'm a mythology buff :nerd:
And Freya is probably my favourite FF character, if I had to choose.

I just know they talked about Valhalla being split up between Freyja and Odin. I guess that's why I thought that. Now that I reread it I see that you are right. lol But yea, definitely a great character. :D

I am playing Valkyrie Profile Lenneth at the moment and Norse Gods play a big part in that so its quite fresh in my mind. I do feel the Rat/Dragon Knight thing was a bit random but it does work really well. I always used Freya in my party even though her Trance is limted. Not thought about Odin relation before, you are quite perceptive!

In Cleyra they also call people like Sir Fratley and Prince whatever his name is, there are alot of different cultures there.

I thought Freya was a good character but she had a lot of potential which was wasted. She wasn't really used much after the start of disk 2 and her backstory with Sir Fratley wasn't really expanded upon much.

Good job on noticing the irish dancing XD last time i played it i was just too O_O to try and make sense of it

When you think about it, there are a lot of Norse connections. For example, the fact that Freya is a Dragoon. Dragons feature prominently in Norse mythology. Dragoons are usually associated with Dragons. Freya is a Dragoon.
There are issues, however. Freyja (the myth) was known for being greedy and vain. She did all kinds of really, really stupid stuff for the sake of shiney stuff. The best example is when she slept with four dwarfs in order to get a really pretty necklace they made. I doubt Freya (the character) would do the same.
You'll notice that on most occasions where Eidolons destroy stuff, it's Bahamut that does the destroying. Not with Celeyra, though. Celeyra is blown up by Odin. Coincidence? Hell no.
And that's it for this post.

Yea, I thought about that Odin thing too. lol But you know, you did meet Freya in a hotel when you first see her. Who's to say there aren't four very satisfied dwarves upstairs? They were there for the Festival of the %^&!
