Anyone bothered doing all the (available) battles?

I've never bothered previously, the intention has always been there, I thought they were determined by time rather than events. As I have tried on previous play troughs, and have only ever done like 3 of them before getting to the mandatory one.

I'm glad I wiki'd it this time, or I would have ended up missing them all again, as I was stupidly running around the Junon area (I was limit training, so my time wasn't totally wasted) trying to initiate the next battle, when I discovered I had to go to Junon and fight Bottomswell first.

So, so far so good, Im at Cosmo Canyon and Ive already fought 4 battles. I'l bastard do it this time

So, do you do them, if you do, what's your stratgey? Do you try to get soldiers out dependent on what you're likely to face, or dop you shove whatever down and hope for the best. Or do you simply wait for the boss to advance to the hut? (you don't get the item if the party has to fight the boss though I don't think)

I tend to fill the middle area up right across the board, I tryyyyy to be tactical about it, I tend to forget what I'm facing though, and try to keep it mixed up, I will tend to heed the guy in the huts advice though

I'l then just send them all down and try to block the way in, halting the enemy attack before the boss gets a sniff in. So far so good

I. Love. This. Game.

It's awesome. :mokken:

I gotta be honest, though. Haven't played it in... years. I use to just line the tops of places with those cannon-things. Place some soldiers downhill, and what not. I usually send my men down to the battle field, while keeping some closer to base, until the boss arrives. Then when the big bad rears itself I letloose on the big guns and let load some kick-ass.

Some guy on gamefaqs said:
Battle #1: Takes place before resting at the house in Junon. You'll win a Magic
Comb. (A weapon for Red XIII)

Battle #2: After Resting at the house in Junon, before going in the water with
Mr. Dolphin. You'll win a Peace Ring.

Battle #3: After getting in the water with Mr. Dolphin, before jumping onto the
Voltage Tower. You'll win an Ether. (HUGE thanks to the FF7 message board for
this one! The game also mistranslates it into a Tincture)

Battle #4: After getting the Buggy, before the Buggy breaks down/getting
through the Cave of the Gi. You'll win a Megalixir.

Battle #5: After getting through the Cave of the Gi, before getting the Tiny
Bronco. It "Says" you win 5 potions, but you don't...

Battle #6: After getting the Tiny Bronco, before getting the Keystone. It
"says" you win five potions once again, but you don't.

Battle #7: After going on the date, before putting the Keystone in the Altar at
the Temple of the Ancients. You'll win a Super Ball. (A weapon for Yuffie)

Battle #8: After getting through the Temple of the Ancients, before going to
sleep at the Forgotten City. You'll win three Turbo Ethers.

Battle #9: After getting to Disc Two, before completing the Whirlwind Maze.
You'll get three Turbo Ethers.

Battle #10: It takes place during the seven days you're captured in Junon. You
cannot go to it. Shinra attacks five times during the seven days you're asleep.

Battle #11: Same as #10.

Battle #12: Same as #10.

Battle #13: Same as #10.

Battle #14: Same as #10.

Battle #15: After getting the Highwind, before visiting Cloud at Mideel. You
don't seem to win a prize from this, as the message box is blank.

Battle #16: Shinra attacks while you're visiting Cloud at Mideel. You cannot go
to it. Another wasted oppurtunity -_-

Battle #17: After visiting Cloud at Mideel. Take note that this battle is
MANDATORY. Before doing the battle, the man will give you all the money he has.
If you win, go outside to get the Phoenix Materia and talk to the guy at the
table to get the Huge Materia. If you lose to CMD. Grand Horn here, you're
kicked out of Fort Condor FOR GOOD.

I just wait for the enemies to make their way up to the top and fight the boss.

I gotta be honest, I really hated this mini-game. I find it boring and a waste of time. Set up troops and watch the action play out - nope, not interested. I like strategy RPGs, but not much strategy-wise interest beyond that.

Not to mention ultimately, you still need to fight a boss battle at the end. If you can actually avoid a boss battle, I've never managed it myself >_>

Last time I played, I just let the poor bastards die while I waited for the big boss to show up :monster:

This is what I do too. :8F:

I think the first time I played I actually did three or four of the battles. I don't think I ever did every single one of them. In all subsequent playthroughs, I've only done the first battle and haven't bothered with the ones after that. :lew:

You can avoid the boss battle Fusionist! He doesn't even need to make it on the field, if you beat all the enemies and have all your troops move right to the bottom of the screen you can stop them from advancing

I've always enjoyed this minigame

Incidentally, for the final battle, you might as well let the boss advance to the hut, as you get the field items anyway (Phoenix Materia/Huge Materia) plus whatever the boss drops

And you get some gil back for any survivng troops

As long as you go into the battle with enough fundage, you should be reet

When I first played FF7, I never bothered with the Fort Condor battles. When I played it again a few months ago, I tried to. But I forgot about a battle when I went to the City of the Ancients and was like "Ah, screw it." and didn't do any more. It was time consuming, having to go all the way back there from different locations, do that, then go back to where you left off in the story (early on that is, I know it'd be easier once you have access to the Highwind). >_>

I didn't bother too much with the Fort Condor battles. My first couple play through I simply just never thought about it. I always forgot about Fort Condor until I had to go there to get the huge materia

Still haven't done all the battles, but I really don't see any point to do them now. I don't know what it could do new for me anyway

It is best to "lose" one and fight the battle anyway, that way you can steal & collect winnings from the boss fight.

I remember going there to play it when I got bored and I got a Huge Materia on accident xD I didn't even know you had to go there, but I went there and got it. And thats the only time I've done it, excluding the time I helped my brother get the Huge Materia

I did the actual troops battles ONCE, I found it to be a total waste of gill and time, I normally just sit back and wait for them to get to the house and go outside and fight the leader off myself and be done with it, it's an easy win..lol.

Ah ooh, I've done them all :monster:

Some of the battle rewards are abit poop, but the first one you get for Red, and the Superball for Yuffie (y)

The only one I let the boss comeon the screen was the final battle taht's mandatory, I wanted the item for beating him. Other than that, I'm just too ace and stop the enemy attack before even a handful of them can make it on the battlefield :mokken:

I did all of them, but that's because I was following a guide. The superball was very worth it. But otherwise I find it very repetitive and irrritating. There is one or two battles where you have to backtrack from one continent to the other...

I used a strategy I found in the guide. Before the fight, place a fighter just before the border. When you start the battle, place more fighters in a straight line towards the south, so that your border will be extended southwards. When you reach near the entrances, place attackers and catapults in every entrance. You will soon halt the enemy after a few battles.

I hope when they remake FFVII (which most likely won't happen), they should include this minigame too, but this time, give some kind of teleportation device back and forth to fort condor and a device that alerts you when a battle is available.

that would be ideal :gonk:

It's too'ing and froing on that bloody boat that drives me mad, mind you, it was just as irritating navigating the stupid shallow waters on the tiny bronco

Though, it did help to break up the battles for limit training, once I was back in the junon area, Id head for the forest and rack up the kills to get the next lot of limits then head to fort condor

I've done most of them. Got past the time they named an Elixer differently. I rushed online and asked if I didn't have any elixers would the item go in my inventory as the new name. Turns out no it wouldn't. Its like the megalixer you find in gaia cliff called "Last Elixer". It would be cool if you could change the names of the items as proof you've done such things. Oh well.
