First Blitzball Tournament

I used to have trouble, but now I almost always win the first blitzball tournament.

I've decided giving Tidus Sphere Shot rather than Jecht Shot is actually more effective, since you have so little time before Wakka comes in to use it. But it takes more knowledge of how to move him to avoid multiple defenders, whereas Jecht Shot guarantees at least one goal. (here is my winning blitzball strategy for that tournament).

A whole lot of optiona npc dialog changes depending on whether you win the tournament or not. Gatta and Luzzu congratulate Wakka, various people around Luca congratulate or express amazement, the reporter will interview Tidus, and a number of Goers fans express dismay and outrage. (Some think it should be investigated, even more than Operation Mi'ihen). My favorite response is the old guy back in Besaid, if you take the ferry back there following Operation Mi'ihen (the ferries aren't running before that):

Some wild youngsters are saying the Aurochs won after a 23-year losing streak! Yeah, well that'll be the day! Aurochs winning? Heh! Heheh!

Hmmmm. Now I'n curious. I can't find any FAQ that lists what the winning/losing prizes are for the first tournament.

I gotta get back to work, but I think I'll dig out a saved game tonight and see what you get for win/loss.

The intention was there, but after getting beat repeatedly and restarting, I just gave up, i hate Blitzball at the best of time. I tried again my most recentplaythrough, lost the first time I tried and I didnt even make it to the reset button before I decided sod it. So no, I never won it and I doubt I ever will

I could not beat the first tournament with the Luca Goers without the Jecht Shot. I had no idea that you had to actually press the buttons right in that mini-game on the ship to obtain it. Yes. -_- I was slow. Second time round it was a snap. :awesome: I just had to make sure to get off a few shots before Wakka swam on in all his uselessness. -__-

the same happend to me but i almost won without the jecht shot then the goers killed me at the end beating me 3-2

The Sphere Shot did come in handy that first tournament but i still lost :(

But i Have won every tournament since then everytime i've started a new game again

If you win you get a +4 strength sphere.
It's not too hard to win though but it involves a bit of luck.
In the first half you have to make sure you don't concede and keep possession as much as possible. Thankfully the AI is completely retarded so with the person in possession try and draw players out of position by teasing them and not getting too close. The gaps they leave behind should give you enough space to pass to Tidus and have a shot. Obviously in the second half just give it to Tidus and use Jecht Shot.

Poot, I just went and played to see what the prize was and logged in to report.

I will say I had to go into overtime to win this time, which means more luck involved than usual. The key is that Abus (right forward) is a total lame-ass, so all you have to do is pull him out of position, opening up a hole on your left side so that Tidus/Wakka can face Balgerda one-on-one. With that you don't even need the Jecht Shot:

-- Get the ball (duh)
-- Pass it back to Jassu
-- Have Jassu skim the wall headed towards the goal
-- Break through Abus
-- Pass to Tidus/Wakka with your directional stick cranked left so the shooter's swimming towards the goal as he catches the pass
-- Hit square the instant the ball is passed so the shooter immediately is ready to shoot
-- Break to Balgerda, who only has about a 10% chance of getting the ball away from Tidus/Wakka in a tackle
-- Sphere Shot/Venom Shot is high enough to beat the goalie's BL/CA most of the time

I failed miserably at blitzball. It was my weakest point in the entire game. Now that I've read some of these tips, I'll go try again. Thanx for the help!

Yes, it is possible. I've won it at least twice on my playthroughs. I usually spammed Shots using Tidus or Wakka.
Although, I wasn't even close to winning the first time I played FFX.

I quite enjoyed Blitzball to be honest. (Didn't like it in X-2 but that's a different story.) I failed miserably the first time I played it, but one of my more recent playthrough's I was able to stomp them. It wasn't a simple win, more of a blow out.. 5-0. I don't know how to be honest.. I just got... REALLY lucky. I think I even took a picture of the screen unsure if I was even really seeing it correctly, should I find it I'll show it.. but I won 2 Strength sphere's, instead of just one. I've also won an HP Sphere and I think I possibly won something else.. defense sphere I think.. but I know the Strength and HP for sure. I was a fan of Blitzball so I practiced and got really good.

I have. The last time I did it, Tidus didn't even score a point in the game. Datto got 2 and Wakka got 1 when he came in. For some reason, I couldn't get Tidus close enough to actually do anything with him.

bah. blitzball. the low point of my gaming life- I could never do it!

MOD EDIT: Could you please refrain from one-liners in the future please. They can be considered as spam and will be deleted in the future.

Winning gets you a strength sphere as far as I'm aware.

Jesus, blitzball is like death to me. I had to play the first game over and over again to beat it but finally did. Maybe some of these tips will help... hopefully...

I won this tournament my first (and only) time through. I agree with those that say there's a lot of defense to it. I remember my final score in early matches being pretty low in numbers. You're gonna have to save a lot, and get Tidus or another character near the goal for a better chance to score. The Jecht shot makes things all the more easier, but I remember things like Poison Shot and other small "specials" coming in handy too.
