Final Fantasy and Romance

Romance

So, we all know that FF games have romance within them. Which game had the best Romance? Which had the worst? Do you even like Romantic values in your Final Fantasy games? Explain

Discuss: Romance within FF titles

Personally I hate the romantic sides in the FF storylines. The best would have to be Tidus and Yuna.

I agree. Couldn't say they fitted perfectly with each other but still. The worst will have to be... Cloud and Aerith, it's because they didn't kiss:P

Actually, I say the worst is Rinoa and Squall. He was a badass in the beginning then she came along. pfft.

Cloud wants a threesome between Tifa and Aerith. =p.

He seemed to have too many emotions.

Ashe and Balthier make a good couple.

Geez, no one's mentioned Zidane and Garnet yet. I thought they did that romance very well.

Locke's tragic story with his lover and then meeting Celes was pretty good too, i thought.

Yes, FFIX's romance was certainly discreet and the end kinda had that sense of overwhelming romantic joy. :monster:

I agree, I say IX had the one of the, if not THE, best.

Definitely X. I simply loved the romance in this game. It was very well done. Emotional but not overdone, and it developed over a period of time.

Of course Final Fantasy X. They shared a "make-out" scene. =p

I think having the romance in the storyline makes the plot much better. It's not all about saving the world and all the action/wars.

Definitely have to go with Zidane/Garnet from IX <3 I usually don't ever care for the main romantic couple in an FF game, but Zidane and Garnet completely won me over. The ending FMV really sealed the deal for me :P

2nd would be Cecil and Rosa from IV. I'm a sucker for the 'forbidden-ness' towards the beginning.

Uhm...I'm not to tied up in romance stories. I actually prefer plots that are more serious. I found that in FFVIII for example, the plot was too hard to take seriously because Squall and Rinoa shared such a childish romanticism with one another.

FFVII rests somewhere in that gray area...where you can't tell if you want to accept it as a romantic story, or as a tragedy.
I personally accept the game as a tragedy, since we do not see the ultimate outcome of the plot. I look at it as if the human race was expelled by holy, since the game gives subtle hints of that finalization. However...FFAC ruined that plot twist.

My favorite FF romance is between Zidane and Garnet. Their romance is progressive, as I have said many times. Their feelings for one another are blatantly obvious to the player, however...they never openly express these feelings in the game itself. And most importantly; their romance does not become hopelessly intermingled into the plot.

I'd have to go with Tidus and Yuna, on this one. I don't know if it was the voices, the scenes, the music or the plot ... but there was something about them both that gave you a lump in your throat when Tidus leapt from the Airship.

Zidane and Garnet. That was the only one that was really well written and the final FMV was one of the sweetest things ever.

@ Riku:

I think that something is the realization, well, I'll phrase that as...'premonition', that Tidus and Yuna might never get back together again.

The story sucks you in so deep that it does that automatically and without your realization. :P

Their romance certainly wasn't all blown out of proportion nor was it one of the more prominent ingredients in the plot, but it certainly is poignant.

Generally I like the romantic aspects of FF games as long as they're believable. They add a definite human element, which seems crucial to Final Fantasies in general - did anyone else feel like FFXII was weakened by the lack of romance?

That said, I hated Tidus and Yuna's relationship. I don't know why, though I have a definite feeling that James Arnold Taylor has something to do with it. The pond make-out scene just seemed like an awful hurt/comfort fanfic. I did feel sad at the ending, where Yuna has to watch Tidus fade away - so their romance wasn't totally lost on me.

I also kinda disliked the romance of FFVIII, although that is my favorite game of the series. I totally bought it on my first playthrough, but recently I've been replaying and I just found it kinda annoying for the majority of the first two discs. But of course, the crucial events of the third disc brought me over, and the scene where Squall saves Rinoa at the Sorceress Memorial totally won me over again.

In general, I liked the romance of FFVII the most. I liked the fact that it was present, but not necessarily in your face. The whole Gold Saucer thing was great, too, because of the way that romance was kinda customizable based on player input.

I DO enjoy romance in an FF game, without it it just feels...odd.

My favourite romance in any game would have to be between Cloud and Aerith because its so cute, and then so horribly Tragic. their romance is comparable to scott and Jean, Darth Vader and Padme and so on, showing how Love conquers even Death.

I also really love the romance in FFVI - Locke and Celes = <3

its awesome to see him turn her from a battle hardend General who wasn't a "love struck fool" into someone who loves and cares deeply for him

Zidan and garnet is also amazing. The ending scene is beyond perfect. and the "your not alone!" scene were Zidane fights with everyone...and when Garnet comes at the end and is the last person he fights with...it chokes me up ^_^

I personally accept the game as a tragedy, since we do not see the ultimate outcome of the plot. I look at it as if the human race was expelled by holy, since the game gives subtle hints of that finalization. However...FFAC ruined that plot twist.

I. Love. You. Thats what i thought when i played the game three years ago and when i replayed it two weeks ago. I thought Holy and the Life Stream wiped out humanity (Bugenhagen said it was up to the planet to decide if humanity was good for it or not), and the 500 Years Later ending helped confirm that suspicion.

My favorite FF romance is between Zidane and Garnet. Their romance is progressive, as I have said many times. Their feelings for one another are blatantly obvious to the player, however...they never openly express these feelings in the game itself. And most importantly; their romance does not become hopelessly intermingled into the plot.

It wasnt sappy either. It was like a romance in real life (minus Garnet being a princess), they both loved each other but were too shy to say it so it only resulted in awkward moments and miscommunication.

I'd have to go with Tidus and Yuna, on this one. I don't know if it was the voices, the scenes, the music or the plot ... but there was something about them both that gave you a lump in your throat when Tidus leapt from the Airship.

I abhor Tidus's voice, it makes me want to murder him in the most painful and humiliating way possible. But the ending did leave me with a lump in my throat, it was really good. The Tidus/Yuna romance isnt my favorite, but it's still pretty well done.

XD Well I also feel the same way about FFVIII; I find the conspiracy theories to be much more exciting. Even though I found the game hard to take seriously, the Rinoa/Ultimecia theory makes the plot much more romantic.

And I agree, even though I actually turned the voices off the second time I played FFX, just having their voices echo in my memory still ruined it for me.

Totally missed your post, Aerith.

I also really love the romance in FFVI - Locke and Celes = <3

Finally! Someone else who mentioned that! And just the story of Locke's old lover and realizing how he sees her in Celes is pretty heart wrenching.

Tiny sprites that give you a lump in your throat = awesome storytelling skills
