I love romance in a game, if it's done right. I fear that as the FF series is Japanese in origin that we lose a lot in translation (Hey, that just gave me a great idea for a movie).
Also romanticism in the east and west are different, as they are in Europe and America. We tend to see Americans as over-sentimental, they tend to see us as under-sentimental. Love isn't any different for any country, but how we show it is.
For me there was little if indeed any romance in vii, which is why I find Clairith so irrational. That was a story about loss, not romance, although one could argue that the two are not entirely unrelated.
X did work for me on a romantic level, but only in the scene between Yuna and Tidus swimming. I liked that a lot.
For me the story of Zidane and Garnet wins the prize. I smilled like a freak at the end. I just thought it was the most 'honest' story of a couple.
Thus ends my innane ramblings.

I whated those two to be together so bad. Well I'll always have Kingdom Hearts 3. Or I hope that they bring her back
