i think its way under rated there's so many people that go on an on about 7 but not give any of the ff's another chance. ff8 had great characters and a great story i don't believe that people should hate 7 but 8 is excellent also and doesnt get enough credit.

I had a similar dilemma but mine was about FFIX,
It's absolutely my favorite of the entire series and it got no reception from anyone.
In all honesty FFVII was a good game, but I didn't think it would blow up to what it has.. But at the time games weren't as complex I suppose. I always passed up on VIII I will be honest. I never really got into the story. I completed FFVIII for the first time late last year only because one of my good friends said it was his favorite, and I never gave it a chance so I did. I must say toward the end the story was more enjoyable to me, but I still find FFIX to be the best of the series.

Any game to follow VII had high expectations to follow, and VIII did pretty well from what I understand. Much better than IX.

don't think ff8 was the best game in the series however it was a lot better then it reviews and how much fans it got.
So yes i agree with you however it like this a figure skater is really good however before them the judge saw a master skater so the good one will be rated lower then she should be because next to the master one she looks bad however if she skated before the master one she would have been rated higher.

sorry for grammar

In comparison to VII... yeah VIII doesn't get that much recognition but it still had a lot more then IX did. VII & VIII built the series on a more sci-fi premise which attracted a lot of people so when IX came, it went back to the roots of final fantasy and broke from the dark sci-fi worlds of VII & VIII. VII even leaves VI in the shadows as well, which thats another FF title thats highly regarded as one of their greatest. That's like what I used to complain about with Castlevania when Symphony Of The Night became big, it left the other great title Super Castlevania IV in the shadows and it didn't get the recognition Symphony got. I love both games, Symphony is my all time favorite playstation game and IV as my all time favorite super nintendo game. With VIII it probably doesn't stand out as one of the strongest, X & VII get praised more but thats just because VII has set the standards so high and unfortunately once standards get set so high they become harder to reach.

I think the reason that VII is adored so much was the enourmity of the game. It was also the first big 3D rpg for the PS, and therefore was more groundbreaking than any other game preceding it. Although VIII was the first game to have realistic proportioned characters, VII had already set the standard.

Also I think a lot of people are unimpressed by the strange plot, and the whole Ultimecia time distortion thing, and the inane drawing of 100 spells etc. So maybe it is underated but it was my first FF so I'll always be a fan!

I thought we already had a similar thread to this already, but I can't seem to find it, or I'm imagining things. xD

I think the problem with FFVIII is that FFVII was so huge, and such a phenomenon, any game following it was going to be in its shadow. I think that, since FFVII, every FF game after it is always going to be compared to it. Even for FFXIII, I've seen reviews in magazines saying "Is it better than the legendary FFVII?"

So I imagine it must have been really bad for FFVIII, especially as it was so radically different from FFVII, and all the other previous FF games. I think it's almost like the "Black Sheep" of the family, people either love it or hate it, there seems to be no middle-ground with FFVIII.

I think it IS in FFVII's shadow, but I think any game that followed something that successful was always going to be.

I agree, its always "Yeah but VII is waay better", I am sick of that at one point we were supposed to get another installment to FFVIII but I guess they stopped it for AC, I mean personally that game is what got me hooked on the FF series, I never understood what I was in VII, but VIII introduced me to the franchise.

nobody can really complain though seven was the great big game but i don't think it was good enough to put all other ff's behind there all excellent as well

ff8 was the first i played also

I dont think 8 deserves the bashing it gets sometimes but its far from the best FF, imo. I personally find it incredibly boring at times and the world map music definately dosen't help. Some characters are pretty bland and the only one i ever find myself feeling anything for is Squall, since he is pretty realistic.

There were some really good parts like Balmb vs Galbadia, the space sequence and anything sorceress related. But besides that i find it really boring, iv'e even fallen asleep a couple of times while playing it, and thats never happened with any other game.

Let me rephrase that, Balmb Garden vs Galbadia Gardern (That one part at the end of disc 2). Space Sequence ( That one part on disc 3) and i should have specified on the sorceress stuff, basically meaning the end and figting Adel. Thats hardly enough to make the game awsome.

And thats not even bringing in the bad points, like how boring the music can be, some uninteresting characters, repetitive battles, not to mention that terrible plot device (I think you know which one i'm talking about).

To each his own i guess.

and other ff's don't have most of that stuff i mean repetitive battles there in every single ff ive played. and also ff 8 had an excellent plot. and also the space stuff took up like half of disc three the rest of disc three was involving adel and stuff like that.

There not as repetitive to the point where you just cast Aura and spam limit breaks all day (AKA Squall's already incredibly broken Lion Heart). If memory serves me right (It's been a long time since i played this) The main Adel stuff starts with the Space stuff which is already at the end of disc 3.

i seem to remember at the begining of the third disc you go to the city with the space station 30 minutes later in space then the next thing you do is get the ragnarok and go to kill adel.

yeah it can be repetitive but you dont need to do that i dont

My friend actually was falling alseep whilst playing it. Although I'm not sure if it was down to gameplay! He was in the Tomb of the Unknown King and was about to get killed by a blobya, it must have taken ages to get his health that low!

Anyway I think some people do find the plot boring, but the aura and limit breaking is done by choice. If you find it too easy, just don't use limits. adopt the strategy to make it harder against bosses.

I do agree that the game is underrated and has always been compared to 7. It frustrates me as people thought it should have been like 7, but all FFs are different. I personally think its soooooooooooooooooo much better then 7, I really am sick to the back teeth of 7, thats so damn overrated. 8 has always been my fav and always will be. It doesnt deserve the bashing its gotten.

I will just say I always say. I really like FFVII and it's a terrific game. But I love FFVIII and it's my favourite. FFIX may be more underrated in my opinion but FFVIII is certainly the real 'love it or hate it' game in the series, many aspects of the game (e.g. the junction system, the concentrating on Squall and Rinoa and not so much on other characters) are sharply divisive. I still think that having to follow up FFVII was an impossible task, and the game suffered because people kept comparing the two.

I agree that it is underrated. Even if I never completed the game, it's still awesome to play. I enjoy every minute that I play FFVIII, even if there are areas that I don't like.

While I like VII, with Sephiroth, being all bad and everything, VIII was a real intro to me for games in general and I'm grateful for that. VIII will always hold a special place in my heart when it comnes to games and will remain that way for a long time.

Lol @ all the mentioning of VII here. Is it really necessary by any means other than comparison? But than why not to IX, VI, or X? Perhaps, in using it as a standard of reference, a lot of you are answering certain questions of this thread.

Anyway, I don't really think VIII is underrated. Obviously, it's a very subjective matter, but, in general, I don't think it is.

- The cast was usually hit or miss for people. Something I've typically noticed with the game is that most fans have never liked the full set. You'd have your Seifer, Squall, Quizist fans that didn't like some of the others, or your Zell, Irvine, Rinoa fans that reciprocated the dislike.

- The plot had highlights, but was skewered with bad plot twists and unexplained blocks. People generally agree that things got pretty dicey after disc one. You started having unexplained occurences, several of them huge game changers, that just seemed to be shoved in the story rather than presented or built up. Still, it had its great points, and it certainly had hooks.

- The gameplay was typically a love/hate type of thing either. Some fans, for reasons I can't fully understand, loved the Junction/Draw system. Others, however, including some of VIII's most diehard fans, absolutely hated it. The biggest complaints I see about it are the time consumption or complexity of it. It's generally viewed as a tedious system, which I think is fair.

- Music was great. There were definitely some memorable tracks on here; pieces that really stick with you. I don't think there's ever been any real complaints in this area. Great stuff.

- The graphics in VIII were nice. I think a lot of people had a fond take on the full scale models, especially after the poly-figures of VII. There was a definite step up here from previous installments.

- And the settings/time period is gonna be something that you'll find people to be very crossed about. The whole sci-fi, futuristic age is gonna be hated by those who were acustomed to FF's previous settings, while others--especially after having played VII--would welcome it.

Am I missing any major factor? The game is typically a love/hate thing for people, and if not, different factors of it certainly are. Generally, I find the criticisms of the game to be fair. The different interpretations or takes on the characters are usually justified pretty well, while the complaints of the plot and gameplay are sometimes echoed sentiments. At the same time, I think props are often given exactly where they're deserved.

Really, I don't see what's "underrated" about the game. It got generally positive reviews from gaming magazines back then too.
