Help FFXIII: Time Limit and Star Ratings after battles

I'm a bit confused as to how this time limit and star rating point system works after each fight / battle. I get five stars on battles that takes me well withing the time limit, as well as some battles that takes me within several secs of the time limit.

On several other battles I get three or four stars for doing the same thing. So how does this work?
 
As far as I know, that time that was your benchmark for each battle is NOT the time for a 5-star rating. It's the time for about a 3/4-star rating, if what I've seen in my game is any indication. It would be nice if they showed the 5-star rating time though.

There's also an equip towards the end of the game that supposedly increases the time you have to 5-star a battle. I don't know if it increases that benchmark time or not though.
 
Hmm, I'm not sure actually...I've also noticed this myself. Stupid star ratings and time limits. Makes me feel paranoid whenever I get anything less than 5 stars, just because I took a little longer than the expected time limit.

But anyway, I've kinda concluded that let's say the expected time limit was 2:30. If you meet at least 30 seconds before 2:30 (so anywhere from...oh let's say 1:50 - 2:00) then chances are, you'll get a 5-star rating. But if you meet around 2:15, then that's a minus one, two (most likely this), or three stars. There seems to be some kind of curve with this, I just can't pinpoint that exactly. It seems a little random in my opinion...and quite unnecessary, but eh, whatever. It's there, but I try not to pay too much attention to it.
 
I was paraoid at first. Times I thought I did really well and thought "5 stars" and i got one... :/

I ignore it now.
 
Actually the 5 star Rating actually increases drop rate in rare items Btw =P The recommended times are normally for people who are strong enough to do it that quick 5 star rating means jack to the game play it just boosts ur Drop rate slightly.
 
Right. The time rating is for an average team at that point in the game.

Having low level weapons or a "Gold Watch" accessory allows you MORE time within which to get a 5 star rating and having higer level weapons means you must complete the fight faster.
