FFVIII and its Romance

But that's one of Squall's most infuriating characteristics - all he's done for most of his life is take orders and obey them. So that's all he knows really (he IS a hired soldier after all). The game sees him slowly coming out of that attitude. Rinoa even mocks Squall for it at one point ("Squall would probably say 'but no-one has ordered me to escape'..."). It drives you mad but without it he wouldn't be Squall.

But even at the end of the game, he's still taking orders...like I said...on disc 3, Quistis had to order him to go rescue Rinoa from the sorceress' memorial. =\

I'm just not crazy about the romance because it seemed so forced...
It seems to me like Squall started liking Rinoa just because he was around her so much...

Well sometimes you do start to like someone when you spend a lot of time with them. And the bit where he changes his mind about having sent Rinoa away is meant to be the 'sea change' moment I think. At that point of the game he is changing, but still retained enough of his old nature to have done what he felt was his 'duty' by giving her over to Esthar. Like I said before, that point is fudged somewhat by him changing his mind so quickly, but that was intended to be the turning point.

Yeah well that does not change the fact that you have to save her 5 times and thats just to much to handle because it makes her look like a pathetic main female character...which she actually is.

Okay, yes, sorry to say I agree with Jimmy.
If we didn't have to save Rinoa too many times, like say only saving once or twice with 2 being the limit, then probably we wouldn't look this way.
I mean, it was too blatantly obvious to me, as was stated, that the whole group wanted to force the two to love each other, whereas I as the player, am starting to get sick of it.

Id have preffered to have seen more of laguna and julia, laguna and raines love story than squall and rinoa's.

What with laguna and julia falling in love, then laguna going off to fight the war in esthar and never seein julia again, but then meetin raine. Far better than squall and rinoa anyday!

I agree that Laguna and Julia had a better love story; even though he was a complete clutz, it was still much more dramatic and likeable...

I never saw Rinoa as a helpful character.
She was always weighing the party down. The fact that you had to save her a hundred times was nerve wrecking. How can you appreciate someone when you help them constantly, and all they give you in return is more unnecessary drama? =\
