Help [FFII] Raising Stats

What do each of these stats help with, and how do you increase them? I know some of them are pretty obvious, but Magic, Intelligence and Spirit are confusing me as they all seem to be the same thing >_>

Spirit
Intelligence
Stamina
Agility
Magic


And, is it true that it's easier to raise stats if you fight against stronger enemies? >_> This game annoys me.

It's easier to raise them if you fight against yourself.
Spirit is basically magic defence so you raise that by casting offensive magic on yourself. Magic is raised by just using magic, Stamina by being physically attacked. Strength by using physical attacks, agility also by being attacked, intelligence is also increased by using magic.
Basically use all your MP up in a fight, attack yourself with your own characters for ages ( Guy and Firion using physical attacks whilst Maria uses magic, the switch when she runs out of MP) and then kill the enemies, and most if not all your stats will increase.

But yea fight yourself and you should pwn the npcs. Believe me I had max str before I fought the first boss.
