Here's an interesting one. There've been plenty of those "Who's your favourite villian?" threads, as we'll all know - the common names like Sephiroth, Kuja and Kefka are thrown into the discussions. However, take a minute to step back and look more closely at the situations - the villians you end up fighting and pursuing are not always the masterminds behind the villiany.

Take Garland, for example - he's not the main character against whom you are fighting throughout the whole game; that's Kuja. Garland, while still fought, has systematically caused all of the events in the game to unfold in the first place. Taking out Garland would remove Kuja and Zidane, Brahne's corruption, the use of Eidolon's for destruction ... there wouldn't be a game. Garland has masterminded the entire story.

With this in mind, who's your favourite 'mastermind' from the entire series?

I'm going for Hojo, myself. Single-handedly, he is responsible for every last bad thing that happens in the VII Compilation, save for mako collection. He killed Ifalna and Gast, was the reason behind the production of Genesis, Angeal and Sephiroth and the death of Zack, manipulated the events of Dirge of Cerberus and just generally made VII and its spin-off's possible.

Probably Garland. Although as you said he made FFIX possible I just think he was incredibly naive, I don't think he was bad and I didn't really want him to "die", if you get me? I felt it was comical that he was so mater of fact about Zidane being an angel of death, yet still expected someone (although a Genome) who had free will and understood the value of life to serve him as a slave, same with Kuja really. I suppose my main reason for choosing him is because I never felt his intentions were evil, he was doing what he did because that was his job, he didn't enjoy it, and he didn't dislike it, he was just there.:gasp:

Hojo. He's the cause Sephiroth actually went evil in the first place, AND not to forget taking control of Weiss in DoC

I'm going to join, a couple of you guys here, and say: Hojo. He was, truly, one of my favorite masterminds. Alot of the tragedy, that occured in VII, would never have happened without his character in the mix, etc. Ha ha, without him and Jenova ( the alien parasite ) that is. xD

I say Hojo too... Mann, I couldn't believe that thing with Weiss near the end of DoC =/
All of his experiments really stung alot of people too >.o
I hope he's dead this time =D

I've actually gotta go with Garland myself as well. I mean Hojo did a great job in who he manipulated even as we find out beyond FFVII and we dove into Dirge of Cerberus, but Garland had so many people doing his dirty work.

Brahne and Kuja were powerful forces not to be messed with by themselves, sow hen you have them squaring off against each other all because of one man who sits up in his airship jsut watching as hells unleashed, you begin to see the power and influence Garland posesses. He wants the power of the Eidolons, so he sends in whoever he deems fit and opportune to get the job done. In the end, they all meet their demise, but he still thinks his power and influence will save him, even at his point of death.

I'll Go with Garland. He basically have like everything UNder Control except the part When Kuja kick him off the cliff
