Female genital mutilation

Would you like to hear a story about female genital mutilation? I have to warn you, however -- especially the girls here (though even I -- a man -- was perturbed by it to the degree that I had to cross my legs) -- that the story is rather disturbing.

I used to live in a Middle Eastern country called Jordan. And I once heard this recurring story about a girl who was forced to undergo that procedure -- at the cost of her life.

Here goes...

The girl (I forgot her name) lived with her strict, nutty, extremist Muslim father. She wasn't allowed out of the house much; and when she was allowed to go out, there was a male relative who kept his eye on her the whole time. One day, however, she got so sick of her life and decided to sneak out of the house and go to her friend's place late at night. Unfortunately, someone (a neighbor, relative or friend... I'm not sure) spotted her and immediately informed her father.

When she got back home, he beat her to a pulp, tore her pants off, grabbed a pair of really sharp scissors... and cut her clitoris. She bled to death.

The saddest part of the story, however, is that the father only went to jail for a little while. He was allowed to walk because the judge was "convinced" that the man had "mental problems".

Now, I don't want this to gear off into an anti-Islam argument here, because you don't hear stories like that in many Muslim countries everyday. But of course, honor killings still happen. And according to one source, Jordan had one of the highest rates of honor killings in the region.

It seems like your only argument here is that if they can do it to men, they can do it to women. That's not really a valid argument. The two can exist independently of each other. This thread is about FGM. If you want to talk about circumcision, do it in the thread you created. This thread is not 'compare/contrast female and male circumcision.'

As far as the "women being generally ok with it," it's not as much that as it is the culture being ok with it. The women force it on other women because it is expected of them, generally by the male hierarchy, and patriarchal system. There's a huge sociological aspect to it. I read an article discussing it that said that in places where it is an accepted social practice, the women are ok with it, and experience minor to no sexual discomfort. But where it's a back alley thing, it causes huge amounts of discomfort, to the point where sex is often completely unpleasant.
 
What is the point of this thread? Are we sharing stories we've heard or are we discussing the morality behind enforced (or not) female circumcision? It sounds as if it's much of the former and little to none of the latter.

So what if males enforce the practice? Who says they shouldn't?

(I'm not necessarily of that disposition, I'm just asking a probing question)

Males should enforce the practice. Women are irrational creatures that are incapable of making decisions on their own. They should be subject to the will of their fathers until they are married, at which point they are handed over to their husband. Moreover, women should not be sexual creatures in any way, shape, or form. If they derive pleasure from sex, they may, as they are irrational, decide to have sexual relations before marriage or use sex for a purpose other than procreation, and have multiple sexual encounters, when they should be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, making food and raising the children.

Sarcasm blatantly, ridiculously, obviously intended. Just to cover my bases.
 
This barbaric practice must not be enforced -- to either boys or girls. It's an innate part of human nature to develop sexual desires -- I mean... duh! :dry:

I think a lot of people (around the world) must learn to cope with that, and not justify sadistic acts through which to drown their sexual insecurities.

And Terrible Terry, I'm usually the the first to be the explosively sarcastic one. But I guess you beat me to it this time. AWESOME! :awesome:
