It's pretty much a fact of life that British comedies in general are fucking great. From timeless classics such as Monty Python, Only Fools and Horses, Blackadder and Red Dwarf to the more recent comedies of Spaced we've had many a laugh from our great natural talent.

What shows/actors/quotes etc stand out from the rest for you?

Blackadder - in particular Series 2 and 4. The ending of the fourth series is one of the great TV moments, and is hugely moving. How on earth Richard Curtis went from doing stuff like this to crap like Love Actually is bewildering.

Only Fools and Horses - if only it had stopped in 1996 after the Trotters became millionaires (the Xmas specials after that were very below-par). This is up there with Blackadder as my favourite UK comedy, even after endless repeats it's laugh out loud hilarious. And if you disagree all I can say is, "You plonker!"

Father Ted - delightfully surreal at times, and anchored by four excellent characters. This is maybe the best thing Channel 4 has ever shown. And at just three series it did not outstay its welcome.

Spaced - endless pop culture references always appeal to me. The end of the second series, with Lemon Jelly's The Staunton Lick playing, is another of my favourite TV moments.

These are small cows, but those out there, are far away. Small, far away.

I don't get it.

Oh for christ sake.

Father Ted stands out for me. It's a shame he died so very shortly after the final series was finished.

Spaced is another one of my favourites, so surreal at times, in fact most of the time.

Jam, Brass Eye and The Day Today are all equally brilliant, and dark. If oyu haven't seen any of these, watch them, not for the fainthearted/easily offended (Especially the 2001 Paedophiles special on Brass Eye, that pissed off many journalists and ignorant middle class family)

And of course classics like Red Dwarf, Blackadder, The Young Ones and probably many more need mentioning too for obvious reasons.

Black Adder, Fools and Horses and Allo Allo :D doesn't get any better then that :D

Oh and Monty Python :D

Of course, Python is one of the best things I've ever seen. I doubt anyone would disagree with that, particularly The Holy Grail.

Only Fools and Horses is always worth watching, regardless of how many times you've seen that particular episode. I still think the scene where Del Boy falls through the bar is the funniest moment on TV.

Fawlty Towers goes without saying really. I never tire of watching Basil take a frying pan to Manuel's head. :wacky:

Red Dwarf is another great. At times you get a bit lost, but again, it's always worth watching.

Like everyone else, I loved the surreality of Spaced. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost a genius' when it comes to comedies.

I could go on repeating what others have said really, but I won't. I'll just say how much I love Blackadder, which is a lot.

I will say that I prefer the Monty Python films to the TV series. Especially Life of Brian which is the best thing they did for me, and is a film that is especially relevant nowdays. As well as being bloody funny.

Always look on the bright side of life

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.

So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath

Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
(Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life...

Red Dwarf, bottom & the young ones where prilly my fave. I just love all that toilet humour, and of course life of brian was brilliant!!! ^^

I don't really watch that much British comedy seein as how this is America. But there was one that used to air here a while back. I think it was called Absolutely Fabulous or Absolutely Delightful. Absolutely-something. That show that had those two drunken women who were always cracking up and being drunk. Anyways that show was the shit! I always wondered why it doesn't air anymore.

I still have yet to see any Monty Python. Everyone tells me that it's funny as all hell, but yet I still haven't seen it. I will one of these days, though.

Ab Fab wasn't anything special, I thought.

Has anyone seen Hyperdrive? It's got Nick Frost in, so it's definitely worth watching. And the theme tune for series 1 is great. :wacky:

Unfortunately, I only get what they show on BBC America here so I haven't seen Hyperdrive or Spaced. I would love to see them though, considering how much I loved Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Of course I love Monty Python. I haven't met many people who don't.

And Fawlty Towers is excellent. I had every episode tivo'd because they never show it on BBC America anymore. Some idiot erased it (I hate living with people).

I also watch Keeping Up Appearances and Are You Being Served?

Haven't seen Blackadder yet but I hear it's really good. I wish they'd play it on BBC A.

Father Ted
Black Adder
Mighty Boosh
Only Fools and Horses
Keeping up Apperances
Mock the Week
Black Books
QI
Never mind the Buzzcocks
Red Dwarf
Bottom
Phoenix Nights
Fawlty Towers

Wasn't too impressed with Hyperdrive tbh, it was nice to see Frost as always but the it just didn't seem all that funny to me. They should have made Red Dwarf IX instead, I've been fucking waiting long enough for it.

I dunno, I think they ruined it when they brought Kerchansky (or however you spell her name) into it

She was brought in because Chris Barrie wasn't going to do all 8 episodes of Season VII and because of the movie that was in the works. The only thing that they screwed up that was that they didn't bring back the Scottish lassie they had playing her since the beginning.

Yeah to be honest it wasn't really the fault of Kochanski that Red Dwarf lost a lot of its quality in series 7 and 8. I mean, how do you successfully replace Rimmer (for series 7 anyway) after all? Granted, her character didn't fit in at all with the rest.

I think Red Dwarf should have been laid to rest after Series 6, it just wasn't the same thereafter.

And on that note, bonus points to shows like Fawlty Towers, Spaced and Blackadder for bowing out on top rather than fading in quality for ages before ending. It's all too rare in comedies to quit whilt you're ahead.

Hyperdrive hasn't impressed me much to be fair, could be a bit better.

And they should leave red Dwarf alone.

The major thing is the absence of Rob Grant after Season VI, he's the man behind almost all of Red Dwarfs greatest moments in Seasons I-VI like Polymorth and Backwards and in Season VII when it was just Naylor it was a slightly different style of humour that was on show though it was still pretty good.

Barrie's full return in VIII helped a lot and some great stuff like the Cassandra and Pete episodes gave it some renewed momentum but the BBC being the cunts they are didn't renew it and the movie wasn't going ahead because the studio who wanted to make it didn't want to use the actual cast and other such rubbish.

It's been said that someone with interest wanted Hugh Grant for Rimmer. Hugh Fucking Grant.
