So what exactly are espers? I just got Belias and I want to know what he can do and what other espers there are and where they are at.

Also, if you don't mind, can someone evaluate my progress? I always feel like I'm not up to par because I see all these people at like level 28 and they just got to the Tomb of Raithwall.

Vaan, Balthier, Fran, and Basch are all at level 15 while Penelo and Ashe are at level 13. I have level 2 quickenings for Balthier, Fran, and Penelo and everybody else has level 1. I just got done defeating Belias.

So how am I doing?

im not to far ahead of ya, i also got belias and am now back in rabanastre hunting a mark atm...
my charecters were lvls 16-17 when i defeated belias so i quess your pretty up to par, i know some were really high leveled at that point in the game like levels 28-and higher  crazy huh :)
but now that you have belias you can add him to one of your charecters and use him under your mist ability as a summon..:)
there are a total of 13 espers you can get in the game but not all follow the storyline some are thru side quest.
hope this helps some..

Espers are just summons. When you summon them, I have to say, I'm disappointed by their abilities. If the caster who summoned the Esper dies, the Esper is automatically dismissed, and Espers only help you in several ways. Belias doesn't have a Cure ability, so he can't heal you when you need it, so you got to make sure you keep yourself alive. Of course, there are other Espers who can heal you.

Also, when you summon an Esper, only the Esper and the summoner is on the battle field. All other comrades are dismissed. What sucks is, you tend to get "ganged up" on the battle field and the monsters will come after you and the Esper as well. There is a meter of what looks like circles near the Esper's name on the screen when he or she is out. The circles show you how much time is left before the Esper dismisses regardless of situation, however if you die before that meter is up, the Esper just disappears. However if you keep the Esper out as long as possible as the meter of circles allow, the Esper will go a final attack like an Overdrive or Quickening. I am also disappointed by that, because it's not all that strong IMO. Then again, I only have the first two Espers at the moment.

It's wise to not give all the Espers to one person either. Why? It takes up a whole bar of MP to summon and only one user can summon a certain Esper.

Oh, you can't control the Esper's actions either I think, at least, I haven't been able to.

If you want to know more about Belias The Gigas, he is basically the FFXII form of the usual "Ifrit". So yes, Belias is basically a fire Esper. As for your progress, you always want to reach the Quickenings on the License Board as well as White Magic like Cure, Cura, etc. Also learn Libra and use it. If you use it, it'll most of the time, let you know the level of the monsters around you. You should always be above that level, or only just a couple of levels below the monster. Any lower and the monsters will hack you to pieces.

Before going to the Tomb, I suggest you level up consideribly. You don't want to be underleveled when a boss is around. Anyway, you can always level up when you find that you can't beat a boss. I had to for the Tomb... And Vaan was around level 28 at that time and everyone else was around 25.

Basically, I wouldn't call an esper in a boss battle until there is only the boss and you left. Like Kyon said, the enemies start attacking you and the esper. Usually, if they attack you, it is hard to last for too long, especially since your MP is comprimised after casting the esper. I find myself healing myself and the esper a lot. If the esper is getting hammered, it is almost impossible to make it last till it's special attack goes off.

I end up just constantly healing myself and the Esper. The bad thing is, you can't Cure while the Esper attacks because Espers probably have their own locked 'hidden' Gambit system you can't control and it seems to me that the Esper only attacks when the actual summoner attacks/targets an enemy himself/herself which I find as a major flaw in the battle system for Espers.

At least in FFX you can build up the Overdrive bar and save it. =/ Plus, they're way more powerful in FFX it seems.

Actually I'm not sure if you actually have to have the time run out on the Esper for him to do his final attack. You just have to fullfill the conditions stated in Brady's Guide. The conditions might be to "let the time run out" for Belias, but all the others you have to do one thing before he will release his final attack.

Ultima Being the hardest in my opinion - You and Ultima have to be at critical health in order for her to Release her final attack.

I will admit Espers are really REALLY weak, they are only supposed to be used situationaly to be honest. Like if something (a Mark maybe) is REALLY weak to fire - throw Oil on the target and fullfill the conditions to let Belias go crazy on the MoB.

That's if you don't have spells like Flare/Firaga - Fira kinda sucks. So yea, I agree, I'm pretty dissapointed in the Espers myself.

Heh, it's fine - I hardly ever use Espers as it is, like I said, it's all situational.
