One Thing That Always Stood Out For Me In Final Fantasy is the level of depth in the charachters......

In FFXII there is NO depth in the 6 hero charachters (well maybe except for balthier)

During The Pharos i was wondering, Why are Vaan and Penelo still here?
Did anyone ask them? They hardly even contribute to the story......

Also hated the Cliché story...

Why was Gau there? Why was Vincent there? Why was Amarent there? why was Auron there REALLY?

Doesn't mean anything. But what would the game be like without them????

you forogt the question Why was Kimahri there? XD.

Yes, we all know the story line in FFXII was not up to par with alottt of the FF's in the past. But, the gameplay, graphics, and the design itself was gorgeous. All the hunts and sidequests were fun to do.

So, yeah, the characters were not developed well...but, it was a decent game. Plus...you always are going to have those filler/non-needed characters. =p

Basch had a somewhat decent story i suppose but Vaan i really don't know anything about him i dont know why he is part of the party. I guess they were trying to make a tidus spin off that failed.

I think Square keeps them in for fans to oogle over, maybe.
I mean I for one drool over Fran, Balthier, Vincent, and Auron.

Without them, no fan base for me.

Now, VIII, every character had a story to go with them, that was a big + for VIII.

Vaan's story was that he wanted to become a sky pirate one day and fly an airship of his own. He tagged along because he admired Balthier and wanted to see first hand what it is like to be a sky pirate.

As much as I love VIII...like love, but VIII all the characters had about the same story background. =/.

In XII they tried to have developed story lines and I think with more production it could've gotten there.

Possibly, but yet again it wasn't anything that would be beneficial to the current storyline. My main guess which probably applies to all Viera's is that they want to explore the outside world - there's more to life then the Woods.

And as for VIII...the main characters had terrible backstories for the most part, while XII's at least had some decent variance.

I never liked any of the characters in the main party because of how the storyline was. When Larsa joined the party, it was really weird- instead of having to slay Tiamat and Elder Wyrm, couldn't they just hitch a ride on a swank Archadian airship to get to Bur-Omisace?
The fact that Penelo would follow Vaan around all of Ivalice also surprised me.

Uh...yeah. That would be real clever, alerting the Archadian Forces that Lord Larsa was taking a leisurely ride with the former imprisoned Basch, and Her Highness who was announced dead to everyone Asche :wacky:

No, it was out of the question. How could they anyway? Chances are if Larsa took a ship, someone would have been informed what he was up to. He ya know, did run away from his Guardians... WAY too risky.

I have to agree Balthier was the only one that they added the usual amount of depth to the character; all of the rest was less filled.

Well how so then? I'm curious as to why people keep going on about Balthier being the only one who stood out from the rest.

The game showed his past in a series and made him open slowly instead of all at once like it did with the rest of the characters. The drawn out bit makes it feel like it is more info and you are actually getting to know the person.

Well there wasn't really much of a huge difference in finding out more Balthier then the other characters really. Only so far in you discovered a big secret but that was pretty much it for waiting a bit longer to discover something about Balthier.

True, but if you were feed little by little would it not seem like more over time? Same idea basically there is the same amount of info, but it is the amount exposed at a time.

I swear for the longest time I thought Larsa was a girl! I even asked other people to come watch cutscenes and see if they could guess if he was male of female. Most people choose female and then i let them listen to the voice and they still choose female. I only thought he was male when Vanye was like my brother and i was like what?! Anyway I really wanted to knowm more about the jugdes and how they came to be I was thinking that since
reddas was a jugde
that maybe he would shed some insight as to how one becomes a badass like that.

Yeah...there was a lot of potential here that fell flat on its face. This game had incredible gameplay and environments but horrible story line and god awful characters. I have to say though that characters like Auron and the optional Vincent had more of an impact on their overall story than Vaan did. But FF usually does have a few useless characters thrown in...its just FF12 had the first useless main character. I mean noone is going to go along and say "Why was Tidus in FFX" or "Why was Cloud in FF7" or "Why was Zidane in FF9". If those characters were not in their respective stories, they would be affected dramatically. If Vaan wasn't in FF12...the story would not have been changed much at all..and I'd probably enjoy the game a lot more

I'd have to disagree with Vaan being completely useless. Besides being the catalyst for the group's joining (why would Balthier go to Bhujerba without the purpose of saving Penelo, when she didn't even interact with him since Vaan's not there and meet up with the princess/rest of story?), he also serves as the common Dalmascan, who in the end would rather have peace than Ashe destroying Archadia with the nethicite. She takes influence from him. His role isn't given much showcase, but he's not pointless.

FFXII had Larsa, so it wins.

In all seriousness though (that was serious above actually), I can admit to wondering why Vaan was supposedly the main character. He seemed like he was just along for the ride. However, he turned out to be one of my favorite characters, because I adored his personality and he was great to use in battle. I actually think that XII had a fair amount of backstory and character development, though I think it could've been elaborated more on with certain characters.

Look at FFVII's Vincent. He's optional, and if you do get him for the game he barely says two words. All of a sudden, he has his own game.

I think that's what they were trying to do in RW, tell you some more about the characters.
