Does Squall Remember Ellone?

I am on my second playthrough of this game, and I recently discovered something that caught my attention. The scene that I am about to describe occurs in FH during the concert when Squall and Rinoa are alone talking. As usual, Squall starts thinking to himself during their conversation. Squall thinks about how he believes that it is bad to form relationships with other people, because they will eventually leave you. Squall then has a thought along the lines of, "I will never go through that again, even if I am alone for the rest of my life." I noticed that he only has this thought if you picked the best instruments for the concert. This thought seems to imply that he remembers that Ellone left him many years ago. But he supposedly forgot about her due to his use of the GFs. Can anyone explain this contradiction? Thanks.

well the mmories were only slightly forgotten not completely, as some serious discussion braught it back to all of them. Also this doesnt mean it is Ellone he is reffering to, he may have had a past relationship we dont know about, but it is quite possable he remembers Ellone as he did have memories of crying for "sis" and that could also be the refference...he never did forget his "sis"

You also need to remember that seeing Ellone may have triggered some sort of deep seated memory hidden by the GFs- right at the start of the game he sees Ellone, and she says something along the lines of "so we meet again, Squall"...which causes Squall to ask about her. I know he doesn't recognise her then, but he does seem to realise that he knows her- although when he finds her in the Library, he asks her if she's ellone, and he doesn't relate her to sis...yet.

He dreams about being at the orphanage alot, he probably remembers her vaguely and the pain it left behind, but her name would have just been forgotten I guess, he always referred to her as sis in the dreams, so he clearly remembers someone, just probably not that its her
You'd think seeing her would have reminded him....but then on the other hand he didnt recognise Selphie or Irvine...
I always thought taht that memory loss shizzle was a bit of a weak point in the storyline tbh

I agree. It was a bit weird. I love this game, except for that whole memory loss thing. That's what caused my boyfriend to stop playing it- and it was him who had the game in the first place, I played his copy of it in 2007, and I'd never played a FF game before it

Anyway...I understand what you're saying...it's just a way to "explain away" an important part of the plot, I think

well u must keep in mind, peoples physical appearance change over-time as do their manner of dress so him not recognizing them could be reasonable...

Squall does remember being alone, you see the flashbacks every now and then of him standing outside the orphanage as a child. It's something that's effected him very strongly throughout his life and is the reason why he's so distant with everyone. He's that way on purpose, so he's going to remember why. He just doesn't know it's Ellone, the girl he saw. He only refers to her as 'sis'.

The GF's causing memory loss is the worst part of the storyline. So unbelievable, unrealistic and convenient. It's as if the writers just got lazy and didn't really think that one through properly. If they were going for a twist, it should have been far better.

That's not true. Just because someone's appearance has changed or aged, doesn't mean you can't recognize them. If so, how reasonable is it for them all to not be able to recognize each other? Don't you remember the people you used to always be around when you were a child? The game's answer to that is the GF. I don't remember them ever mentioning earlier in the game it causes memory loss, or about these 'GF critics'. It was just so random. Then as soon as Irvine brings it up, they all remember it so well? They all conveniently have forgotten the exact same time/place in their pasts? And Squall suddenly remembers Ellone being sis? Not believable at all.

Didn't SE plan the memory loss idea from the beginning though ? Because doesn't the main title song that plays at the beginning Liberi Fatali mean Children of destiny or Children of Fate- like it the storylines purpose for the main teenagers of the story to group up and then come together again to defeat Ultimeca ? :/

Think Squall remembers the pain of being loss forgotten and being left behind but he hasn't quite worked out what was causing the pain and why he feels this way..

Sadly no. Not from Preschool and during the orphanage flashback they looked about 4-6 years old. Headmaster Cid mentions at the beginning of the game that GF critics are saying that the GF's cause memory loss but it's load of theories so don't listen to them. When Squall becomes a SeeD speak to Headmaster Cid...

Yeah them all forgetting the same past is kind of weird. But reckon that is just proved that the GF junction does effect your memory, and being a SeeD you probably would of used GF summoning quite a fair bit for training skills.. remember Selphie saying that there was one lurking in the training area in the Garden..

Zell and Quitistis do help Squall trigger his memory with Ellone though- it would take a while realistically for Squall to recover his memory about Ellone being Sis. But it's a video game, could you imagine how boring it would be if Squall just sat there for hours until he had some sort of flashback of Ellone being Sis ? xD

But It was an orphanage where they all grew up together, so they would have been around each other all the time. You can't possibly forget them all, especially the woman who took care of you, or the one person you were ever really close to.

hmm i never thought of this before but... if you are going to talk about memory loss partial memory loss has been documented and usually it does not matter how close you were to the person if you have memory loss you forget them but there are all types of ways to trigger those memories although smells are the most prevalent way auditory is a close second and visual is dead last and even when you do remember how you remember varies widely from person to person some people actually remember a whole lot of stuff at the same time where some people it takes a long time for memory to come back and it happens in short bursts but in any situation it is possible for this scenario to happen

What to them all? The exact same part of their lives? Very unlikely.

I dunno about you, but when I remember someone its by looking at them. I would be able to recognize them from the visual, the eyes, the way they act, etc. That'll be the first way I'd remember, not by their smell. :P

Would you not think it was weird if you forgot an exact moment in your past, and everyone in that time forgot too? Even if there was a reason for the memory loss, that's so far-fetched. For none of them to have thought about their childhood and remembered? All it took for them to remember was Irvine mentioning it, just by thinking about it they remembered. Surely one of them must have thought about it before that?

Concerning Squall and Ellone... They must've been taken to the orphanage together from Winhill, and she basically WAS his adopted sister (though not formally, most likely), and must've treated him like the brother he was to her, up until she was taken away... He was 4 or 5 then, old enough to understand what was going on around him (to an extent), old enough to FEEL, definitely... Basically what happened, was that he received a deep scar at an extremely young age, that eventually turned him into the lonewolf he was. No, I don't think he remembered her, or ever having a 'sis' in general. Just the emotional scar, though he probably didn't remember its origins... If that "again" slipped from him, it was probably subconscious. No doubt he'd thought about his family (or rather lack of it) before. Perhaps he connected his feeling and distant memory of having been hurt and abandoned by someone before with the idea that his parents (whom he never knew) simply didn't want him? He had no way of knowing, perhaps this is what he assumed.

As for the childhood dreams with 'sis' in them, he didn't begin having them until after Ellone started taking him into the past. I doubt he had them before, for some reason. I think the game would've hinted at it.

They really had no reason to ever think much about their childhood specifics, as they are all very bust mercenaries. They all began to remember bit by bit slowly because of Ellone exerting her power over them, but it took Irvine to fully jar the memories back out of them. I for one do not spend a huge portion of time just sitting around thinking about what I did when I was five years old. In fact I don't remember much but sparse memories. If the only thing each of them remember from being four or five was that they played around with other little kids than I don't think they'd consider that to odd.

He definitely remembers being abandoned. That's why he doesn't like people getting close to them, he says, or thinks something along the lines of not being able to take losing someone again. Therefore he chooses not to rely on anyone else. However I very much doubt that he actually remembers Ellone as sis, just that he had a sister figure leave him. If he couldn't remember seifer, who he came into contact with everyday and fought with, then it's very unlikely that he remember Ellone.
