that there's alack of quality science fiction on television.
It does me.

I realize sf is hard to produce and expensive.
It's a lot cheaper to do those silly reality tv shows I don't bother to watch.

Outside of Dr Who and Fringe there's really nothing. There's Grimm and Once Upon a Time but those shows don't interest me.They're not hard science.

The sci-fi channel is such a joke.Unless it has something old on it I liked I don't watch it.I don't like the new programming they do; Eureka, Haven, stuff like that. It's too soft for me.

Galactica was good but it ran its course.Caprica was boring and wasn't going to last anyway.

There's no Star Trek or Babylon 5 on tv and I find it bothers me as at times I really need something like that and it's simply not there.

Is there anything; an sf book , movie, etc etc etc you would like to see run as a regular series either on network tv or on cable tv.

Perhaps something like Ender's Game which you may recall at one time was going to be a video game but got cancelled.
Perhaps Elizabeth Moon's Captain Harrington stuff.
Anything like that.

The Firefly Marathon is on the sf channel today.I feel that series had potential and I wish it had lasted longer.

Any thoughts ?:hal:

I think they're currently in the process of casting the Ender's Game movie

Harrison Ford Officially Joins 'Ender's Game'

The actor will appear opposite Abigain Breslin, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld and Ben Kingsley in the sci-fi adaptation of Orson Scott Card's novel.

They're doing a live action version of Akira(the japanese animated movie) too. There are a lot of projects in the works I can't think of, right now.

Stargate wasn't too bad, imo. The J.J. Abrams Trek reboot wasn't bad either although it was disappointing in terms of originality. There's tons of scifi and related genre present in asian film & animation. A lot of it is a bit poignant and heavy on the brain for my tastes. But, I think they definitely have a more scifi -> technology oriented culture than america & their taste in fiction shows it. Probably the main reason I haven't noticed a lack - I watch asian stuff to fill the void. :ohshit:

I think old school scifi is the best. Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert, H.G. Wells & those types. Heinlein's The Moon is Harsh Mistress is pretty awesome and his stuff is pretty heavily science oriented, IIRC.

Old school author's stuff is by far the most original, best researched, & informed. Quality seems to have somewhat deteriorated as time passed. :x

Buy the Firefly movies & first season. It's short but epic. There's an all-day marathon of it on today, on the Science channel.

I am a old school sf guy. When it was sf not speculative fiction like the avant garde crowd calls it now.
Heinlein, Asimov, Wells, EE Smith, Robert E Howard, HP Lovecraft, ERBurroughs, Jack Vance, Gordon Dickson, the list goes on.

I have a particular affinity for hard science and technology.I want my starships, my time machines, etc etc.Not enough of them on tv and in the movies to suit me.I did like Battlefield LA.
I thought the StarTrek reboot was soft and a plot device that allowed them/will allow them to make new movies based on the old tv series.
I expect something similar with X-men.
They're already remaking Spiderman when the original movies were good enough and they just should have paid Toby McGuire to keep doing them.

shrugs.

The news about Enders Game is good.I expect to go see it when it comes out.We need more stuff like that in the movies and especially on television.

I've heard the newer version of Battlestar Galactica is good, so you might want to check that out if you haven't already. I watched the pilot on Netflix, and it was solid. I plan on watching more relatively soon.

it's all about keeping up with the market. sci-fi's aren't as popular as they were 20 or 30 years ago. it's difficult to predict where it's heading now, i think the age of the historical epic and superhero film is coming to an end. dark knight rises and the avengers will be the end of that.

as for tv, it's only natural that reality is taking over. a reality show is much cheaper to produce than a scripted series as it requires far less in terms of cast and crew.
there have been a few decent ones released over the last couple of years though. i've heard very good things about terra nova and homeland, and alcatraz starts in the new year which as a j.j. abrams piece will almost certainly have a sci-fi/supernatural theme.
