Have you ever seen a Desperation Attack? It seems most people don't have a clue what they are, and most people credit FFVII for introducing limit breaks to the FF series. Well, those people are wrong  Here's a list of FFVI limit breaks -

Terra : Riot Blade
Locke : Mirage Dive
Cyan : Tsubame Gaeshi
Shadow : Shadow Fang
Edgar : Royal Shock
Sabin : Tiger Break
Celes : Spinning Edge
Strago : Sabre Soul.
Relm Star : Prism
Setzer : Red Card
Mog : Moogle Rush
Gogo : Punishing Meteor

Have you ever used any of these? Did you know what Desperation Attacks were? Or did you not know they existed?

I must admit, that until looking it up a while ago, I had NO IDEA that these things even existed >__>

I have to be honest... I knew they existed, but I've never used any of these. o__o And I'm like, almost finishing the game. :gasp:

These attacks can be activated when the characters are running low in HP, right? If that's so, then that's why I never let it happen: I just don't like to see them almost dying XD

I'll try to use them further on though! :monster:

Only seen Edgar, Locke's and Celes by incident and had to look up Youtube to see the others.

Edgar's and Celes's just appeared during random battle, just random fighting. Edgar's HP was low and then at random he whipped around the monsters unleashing a heavy special move and wondered if pressed a wrong button by incident or was just smoking ..
something..

Celes's appeared in a random battle to but knew that she was doing her limit break this time around. But Locke's appeared during a boss fight during the amour-tunnel in the Narshe cave area and seriously screwed up the battle, Celes and Locke both had 1 HP left and thought it was game over until Locke pulled out his desperation attack ^__^''

But yeah tried to see Cyan and Sabin's but just gave up on them and searched on Youtube to see theirs and the rest of the Returners. Seriously, they just appear on random luck..

...I've never heard of these before. :gasp:

So, do you just execute them automatically when you've got low HP? Or is it a selectable attack, in the vein of a FFEight Limit Break?

I certainly had no clue that these things occured, and now I'm intrigued. I've played through this game a few times and I don't think I've ever seen them, that I can remember. Oh well. :monster:

Never knew about it until i read about it somewhere. And in the first place, I never reached Critical conditions, and stay long enough to unleash this attack. Most of the time, that character either dies before s/he gets to attack, or get healed by other members of the party.

I heard of them recently, but I dont think Ive ever seen one, if I have I cant remember anyway.... I think they just happen at like random right? I'd replay the game but I cba with the shitty slowness of the ps2 ¬.¬

You have to be in desperate status, and execute (what would be) a critical hit with the Fight command, which is a 1 in 32 or 1 in 33 chance, if I recall. That, of course, begs the question ... who the hell was fighting with Edgar? o_O

I've heard of them, but never actually seen any. Are they just more powerful versions of regular attacks, or do they have different special effects?

Also, FFVII did introduce Limit Breaks. Desperation Attacks are something completely different.

I'm normally too careful to get to see one of these as they only have a chance of happening when your in a HP critical state, by which point I'd be using the characters turn to heal himself up again. Never liked to risk using an extra attack when I could get hit again. So I only try to use them only if I know the enemy didn't have much HP left, or, if I have nothing left to lose and my partys as good as dead... guess thats why they call them desperation attacks :)

Think they were attacks at around about 3 or 4 times the normal damage and they looked cool, but they aren't guaranteed to happen even when at HP Critical which could be a real bummer if you need that extra bit of damage to finish someone off.

I think I have only ever seen Shadow's desperation attack. I remember this as it has Interceptor, his dog, run along the screen and bite the enemy or whatever, which I think is pretty awesome.

That's how I knew they existed, as I searched up online as to why the heck or how the heck I managed to summon Shadow's dog in battle.

I haven't seen any of the others though that I can remember. I might have seen Terra's Riot Blade and Sabin's Tiger Break, though I really am not sure if I did or if I am imagining things. It's such a rare occurence really, and you must be in a really unlucky and desperate possition in order for them to even have a chance of occuring.

I think its a nice touch having them, and it obviously developed into the much loved limit break / overdrive / etc systems that people have loved in the later games, though I wish that the desperation attacks had a much higher probability rate of being activated / cast than they did.

Not completely. FF8's limit break system was activated from getting your ass kicked to yellow HP, and then being able to substitute your attack command with a limit break attack. And for FF7, the bar also goes up when hit (a long with a lot more), and similarly for the other games too.

It's pretty much the same concept, but in a really primitive form.

Chainsaw ftw.

I've seen quite a few, having played through this game 439769347 times. Give or take.

Terra's Riot Blade, Sabin's Tiger Break, Shadow's Shadow Fang, Celes' Spinning Edge, and Setzer's Red Card.

That wasn't his Desperation Attack. Interceptor will randomly attack regardless of Shadow's status. I've had Shadow at full health and Interceptor triggered on 3 consecutive turns.

Shadow Fang, on the other hand, has Shadow jump around the screen and pop the enemy. No Interceptor involved.

Ah, I could have sworn the website I read it on at the time was convinced that it was.

Just looked this up on FF Wikia, and you're right, it isn't his desperation attack.

However:

If Shadow is attacked physically, there is a chance that Interceptor will parry for Shadow, and thus he will take no damage. If this happens, there is a small chance Interceptor will counterattack with Wild Fang or Takedown, which deal defense-penetrating magic damage to the enemy. These counterattacks do not hit floating targets.
So some of the similar conditions for desperation attack may happen for Interceptor and thus where the confusion might be.

In that case then.... I can't say I've seen any of them for definate, though I do believe I may have seen Terra's Riot Blade.

Maybe that was it.... Interceptor countered on three straight attacks against Shadow. But I swear he'll randomly attack at times too...... Man, it's been too long since I played that game.

EDIt: urgh i need to go back to bed :) didnt notice this had already been posted in a much more condensed manner above

Interceptor does have two different attacks I think based on how much health Shadows has though I'm not sure whether one is a desperation attack or not.

There's 'Wild Fang' which is the one where he just runs along the screen and does a quick attack on the enemy who attack Shadow, and then 'Takedown' which is a more powerful attack as he stops at the enemy and bites him quite a bit. I think you can only get Takedown when Shadows health drops below a certain point, perhaps 50%, as I can only remember getting this attack after having Shadow take quite a beating.

Plus I think the attacks seem to relative in damage to the weapon Shadow has in hand and they'll allways be slightly more powerful than Shadow's normal attack (unless he has a genji glove on)
