Originality is great, but I draw the line at freaky. Even beyond the proportions, the basic design of the characters is just WTF?!

The obvious one is Quina. Just ew. EW.

Eiko's costume design kinda weirded me out. She looks like a toy. Actually so does Quina, but Quina's the toy that you have nightmares about.

But Zidane and his race... okay, I'll accept the monkey tail. I'll accept that they all have the same hair color. But the same hair length, and hairstyle? Ew, I thought it looked bad enough on Zidane. (Sorry Zidane fans, I love his character, but I hate when guys part their hair down the middle... so 90's)

Sadly, I found Zidane's race to be ten times more EW than the Burmecians (who I never found to be very ew at all, or at least no more than the Ronsos or Red XIII).

Don't get me wrong. I love this game and it's not like I hated the character designs. But they really pushed the line for me.

I personally thought it fit the style and art (fantasy feel) of the game very well and like most have already said, I never really noticed until I started hearing and reading complaints about it.

Anyway, I guess I have a hard time imagining this game without anything but chibi style characters and like I said, anything else just doesn’t seem fit, in my opinion.

I actually really like it. 9 just wouldn't feel like 9 if it weren't for the chibi style, and the most important characters are rather young anyway, so it kind of fits.

I didn't really think anything of the characters proportions, or 'chibi' style. However, this doesn't mean I didn't notice that the characters were definately 'chibi'. This direction was probably taken because it really suit the overall direction in which the game was taken in. The characters designs suited the game art perfectly. The designs didn't, in anyway, effect the game for me. If anything, I can't actually see it any other way. I'm sick to death of people saying the game's kiddy, or just blaming there hate of the game on the character designs. I think it's sad and I feel sorry for them because IX was definately up there as one of my all time favourite experiences.

I love the characters designs in FFIX, I don't think they look wrong or annoying. The Chibi style was great, and it worked perfectly for the game.

I don't think it would have worked if the characters had been "normal sized" like FFVIII or FFX.

I didn't really like them when I first played it, at all tbqh. I think Id gotten accustomed to the chars on VII & VIII (altho VII's were pretty shit on the field lol)

But now, altho I haven't played it in god knows how long, I actually rather like them. They are the kind's of things I like to draw and its making me want to get my pencils out :monster:

Sheesh, old thread revival much?

I highly prefer the design style of games like FF8 and FF10, but FF9's design was alright, I guess. It did make the game seem a bit kiddy overall, but uniqueness is a plus in my books. Lawd knows all FF games from here on out will probably be all realism. :|
