Countries as People. NOT People as Countries.
Nationality and patriotism are very important words for most people. I'm am American and that means a lot to me. I'm not closed minded. I'm not a jerk. But no matter what anyone says, no country will ever be better in my mind than my own. Even as much as I respect the culture of other places, my home is the US of A and I could never support any other country like I do her.
I would ask you what you thought of your own country and other coutnries, but that would quickly digress into petty squabbling. I find that if you're a little more creative and abstract in your descriptions of things people hold dear, they're not as quick to viciously defend them. So let's give this a try.
The name of the game is Countries as People. In other words, if you have an opinion on a country, you probably associate personality traits with that country just as you would a person. So if you want to express your opinion on a country, simply say the countries name and give an example of some person you think that is similar. This does not mean list celebrities, just normal people with chracteristics that mimick a certain country. Here's an example.
Example: America is the smartmouth in class. The guy who sits towards the front of the class... but usually a row back and off to the side. He's got a comment for everything the teacher says and he doesn't mind letting people know he's right. He usually is right, so it adds to the impact of his cockiness. He's cool and cocky. He knows it and he loves it.
