The game isn't out in the UK yet but by what people are saying and by the reviews it's getting could this be the best Final Fantasy game ever? Personally I think that this game is great, I've logged in about 50 hours and at the moment, I'll give it a 9/10 at the moment. I look forward to seeing what the rest of this game has to offer.

I personally still like 9 better because of the character development. I didn't "care" about any of the characters in this one--but other than that, it takes a close second! It's one of the best games I've played, ranking up there with KotOR, Morrowind, other good Final Fantasies, etc. VERY good, definitely worth buying and spending far too many hours on.

I'll probably give it a high score when I get it.
looks really good from what I've seen, really looking forward to playing it.

I actually didn't like this game all that much. I would definitely put FF's VI,VII, and VIII ahead of it. I had many complaints among my completion of this game.

Story and Characters - The story was good, but a little too straight forward IMO. It does not compare to the FF's I have listed above. There was a severe lack of development in some of the characters. Honestly, I think that Gilgamesh had more development then Penelo.

Battle System - Maybe the worst ever. I played Star Ocean: Til the End of Time right before FFXII, so that might have made it seem worse. Example: When I fought the final boss I just put my controller down and went and made myself some dinner. When I got back it was in the final scenes of the game. The only thing I ever did in a battle was switch my teams if one happened to die.

Music - What happened? I own most of the FF soundtracks but there is no need to get this one. There was nothing memorable in my opinion.

I could go on but I wanted to keep the spoilers to a minimum.

To give a different perspective, I'm going to contradict Lassic. This is no way an attack you, Lassic, it's just a different view on what you have stated, as I entirely disagree, so showing both views from a standard format helps people...at least, it helps me. Sorry if it seems rude, it's not meant to

Story and Characters - The story is not just about the characters, it encompasses the entire world itself, the political struggles going on, and things behind the scenes. It's about those who pull the strings of fate. You REALLY have to pay attention to the nuances in the text, the facial expressions, and inflections in the voices upon playing this. A party member may say one thing, but their eyes may mean something else, portrayed in a really subtle manner. The characters are developed, fleshed out, yes. The only one lacking, IMHO, is Fran, but then again, she does go through her own changes. Even Penelo's character grows and wraps itself up by the end of the game. Let's not forget that Vaan and Penelo's story doesn't end here, far from it, it sets the foundation for a whole new adventure.

Battle System - It's actually very good. I too, oddly enough, played Star Ocean: TTEOT before playing. Actually, I played them at the same time, this being my fourth time playing Star Ocean. The battle system allows you to set gambits so that you are able to battle as if you are playing with actual people. Instead of having to do everything for your other members, you tell them what to do in case of such and such happening, and they do it. Star Ocean is a simpler version of this, allowing only a few commands to be offered, such as Attack with all your might! Support the Party!, etc.
There are bosses in the game that are much harder than the last boss, mind you, so save before hand if you get it so that you can go do all the side quests and such. That's the true meat of the game.

Music - I enjoyed the music, personally. It wasn't just Aeris' rehashed theme smashed all over the place, or whatever. You know what I mean. It didn't shine as much as it could have, but it didn't distract either (such as running around for hours and being annoyed by the music).

Overall, I loved it. It was fantastic, and I was SO excited at the ending. It was totally worth playing, totally worth buying. :)

I just have a question, if you put the controller down and walk away, why not turn of gambits and play the game, or play as one player and have gambits turned on for the other two?

i like this game a lot but it's not better than FF7
Agreed. The gameplay and graphics were exceptional, but the characters were really lacking, there was nothing about them that really interested me. They hardly ever interacted with each other. It seemed like they spent a long time trying to development a deep, complex story and then threw some characters into the mix. And don't get me started on the ending... it just made me mad, one of my least favorites.

But overall, great game :)

XII is the best one in a long time. It is not, however, in my book the "best". It certainly is up there, but most Final Fantasy's take away from the story lines now and try to make up for graphics. Graphics are nice but not at the price of the story. I still would rather play old school, pixely, final fantasy because there was more depth to the stories. XII had a pretty good story, it really did. But you can tell it was just "another story" to Square Enix, when their main focus was on the graphics. XII is the 3rd best in my book. IV and VI take 1st (because I can't decide between the two) and IX is second. :)

This is easily the best Final Fantasy when it comes to gameplay, the story could use a little work but the gameplay was amazing and the fact that there wasnt a truly definitive main character (though it was obviously vaan) was great

Yeah the fact of their not really being a definitive main character reminded me of VI. :)

Absolutely not. I would not clasify this game as the best FF game ever. FFX was much better in my oppinion, and I liked 7 and 9 even more than that. I didn't name 8 because I havn't beaten it yet....I know...damn me...

As i see it is reduced to how you like stories.
In my opinion, it is not that the characters are not developed nor that the story is about the bigger picture; indeed they are, but i did not feel that empathy with this people as i am used to with rpg characters in general, and it is reflected in the music: although not bad it just does not get in touch with the game.
I think this is missing (or messing) the "r" in rpg.

I don't see how FFVII is better then this, but then it is all down to opinion. :3
However..

- Where was the character development in 8?
(I kinda like..didn't notice it XD)

I don't see why people always insist on there being great character interaction. Did they all have to be best buddies or something? I saw a lot of personal interaction from what I have seen - maybe some people view things differently? Maybe this wasn't the game where it focused so much on that because it wasn't an issue?

As for music, well, ok - not the best, but it's likeable.

Ending (Saw a movie) - Nearly made me cry, so yes, I like it. The other FF endings?

- Haven't completed the early ones yet. VI and IV nearly, I and II nowhere near, III - not got, V - just restarted. As for..

FFVII - Lame. 500 years later rofl. I did not like that. -.-

FFVIII - Probably the best/one of the best endings. Bloody lengthy though.

FFIX - Eh..alright I guess.

FFX - Cheesy.

FFX-2 - AHAHAHAHA. SO predictable it hurt. ;_;

Ok, so I cannot comment completely on the story. I do like the stuff spoken by the Judges. How posh and sexy <3

What I can say about the story is this - so far I have not found it predictable - I have been shocked at a lot of things, and this never happened with any of the other titles I have played. Believe me, some points I was like: "THIS REALLY HAPPENS IN XII?!" Yeah :D
Gameplay..same as with the story. All I know is that random battles are gone, and no longer will I be going "ngjkgndfjighndfuighdffiud NOT NOW!" XD

The other FF's were boring to a certain degree gameplaywise. VI after a time, eh, once you learnt all the magic spells from Espers you were sorted. VII, agh, the materia system failed. FFVIII - OH, I cannot diss that. I loved Junctioning <3. FFIX - pretty good, however, there was just something missing. Can't figure out what. FFX - The sphere grid was just..tacky, time consuming, etc. FFX-2 - made things way too easy. My only real challenge? The optional Via Infinito.

I'm not saying XII will have the best system, and I apologise if I do sound as if I am glorifying this game too much already, it's just I have seen a lot of amazing stuff coming from this. The gameplay system seems really exciting, so much more realistic. ^^;;

Hope noone was..offended by any of this XD

The game is obviously more enhanced than the other ones, but as far as character development...I think they should spend more time on that. They focused way too much on the storyline and side-quests that I feel as if I don't really know the characters, atleast not like in the other FF games.

But yeah, I must admit this game is more realistic and pretty darn good. I enjoy playing it, nontheless. :P

could this be the best final fantasy?

of course, the question implies an opinion for an answer.

and my opinion? it quite possibly could be the best in my book. ;) i love it so much.

I just have a question, if you put the controller down and walk away, why not turn of gambits and play the game, or play as one player and have gambits turned on for the other two?

Because I felt like putting as much effort in to the game as I thought Square-Enix put into it. Which in my opinion was not as much as it should have been.

To me, it is the second best Final Fantasy, just edged out by Tactics. It is a great game and well worth a purchase. Square-Enix needs to look at this game more when they need to see how to make a game done right.
